Point Values - Sharp Changes!

As we get ever so close to making our decision to join, we have been pouring over the glossy, hard-cover advertising books from 2000 and 2001. Much to our surprize, there are large point changes for some vacation plans!

For example, the Alaska Cruise now runs 50 points less than a year ago ... while the Disney Cruise runs 20 points more, in some categories.

Are such changes customary? Can anyone recall similar changes in past years?

Yes, the non-DVC resort points can change. I haven't taken a close look at things but there are ups and downs.

DVC resort points are at fixed overall amount. If something goes up, something else goes down.

Sometimes they even offer "sales". They offered a VERY good deal on the Disney cruises a year or two ago.

Those things are negotiated by DVC. I am not sure how long each negotiation stays in effect, but all of those things are subject to change and any of them can be discontinued at any time.

The ONLY sure thing is stays at your home resort. The ability to exchange to other DVC resorts is not even guaranteed.

When we were at Boardwalk three weeks ago and attended the member update, the guide made a point to tell us that Disney had been able to negotiate a substantial discount for the Alaska cruises this year, which is why you see the 50 point drop. Hope it lasts, as my wife wants to go on that cruise next year.

There have been a few points changes for non-DVC programs...and most all have been a favorable change for DVC members. Some resorts/cruises/programs have been deleted and others added to augment this aspect of the program.
There has only been one DVC resort point change- in 1996 for OKW- where some dates were increased and others decreased. There were some changes at that time for weekends (lowered). There was a change initially at BWV when preferred/standard views were added and a point differential created there.
