Point transfer question

The background:

I have a small 25 point BWV contract (our only contract right now since we sold our initial one when we bought our new house). It is 25 point BWV contract with a June use year (so we are in 07 right now). We borrowed 5 points in 2006 - so we have 20 remaining in 2007 - and missed our 100% banking window in Sept, so we still have 20 through 5/31/08.

Now we are thinking of taking a big trip in Sept. 2008 (our 08 UY) and another in May 2009 (also our 08 UY).

We will know our Sept dates (and therefore, also our point requirement) prior to 5/31/08 - but not for our 5/09 trip - so I am trying to figure out the best way to go about having points transferred.

The question:

If I have 100 points transferred into our 07 UY before the end of May, are we able to bank them or are we limited to only banking 20 points (75% of our annual allotment?)

With moving and havign 2 babies, I'm kind of out of touch with all the "new" rules (or rather, which ones are being actively enforced). I remember before we had no trouble making multiple transfers in a UY and now with them actively enforcign the transfer rule, I am trying to figure out how to make this work.

The banking rules changed on January 1, 2008. Ther are no longer 50% and 25% banking deadlines. You now have until the end of the 8th month following your use year to bank up to 100% of your points. After that you cannot bank at all. With a June use year, your banking deadline for your 2007 use year points was January 31, 2008.

You are allowed to bank transferred points - your banking deadline does not apply to those.

I have a question too. I have a small contract... with a different membership number because it was not purchased through Disney. I wanted to transfer banked points from it to my big contract to use easier. I was told you cannot transfer banked points. Is that right?

If so, it would probably be in my best interest to always transfer the points... and then bank them from my main membership account. Right?

I guess I'd only lose my 11 month window for this resort... or does that right transfer too?

Yes, that is correct. You are not allowed to transfer banked (or borrowed) points. You can only transfer current use year points, but the recipient of the transferred points may bank them.

Transferred points retain their original home resort and they are supposed to retain their original use year. I'm not sure if the computer system recognizes that on its own or if it's just a note the CMs monitor. It could turn out to be a hassle for you if you want to use the home resort advantage of the smaller contract after you transfer the points.

Keep in mind that if you transfer from the small contract to the larger contract, you use up your one transfer per membership per use year for both contracts.

IMHO, there is no need to transfer between your contracts unless you need a few points from one or the other to reserve a night (after the 7 month window opens). Since your contracts are under different memberships, you must reserve whole nights from each. For example, if a night costs 10 points, you couldn't use 2 from one contract and 8 from another. You'd have to do a transfer between the contracts to do that (and you would also use your one transfer per use year for both contracts).

HTH.

Just to clarify (wish search was working)

You can transfer points and then bank them - YES?

Bank and then transfer the points - NO?

Transfer borrowed points - NO?

Thanks for your help! I hadn't really thought about having 1 transfer PER use year... and using them both in 1 small action. I guess I'll celebrate the thought... that even though having 2 UY is entirely aggravating for me... one day I might want 2 transfers!:woohoo:

Thanks for your help too! I REALLY wish search was working too. I thought it was just me. Wonder if it is temporary?

The DIS techie's are working on it. But the search feature was a major reason why the boards were so slow. I'd rather answer the same question over and over again than have the old poky boards back, LOL.

Oh... didn't know!
Agree with you... (you've probably had to answer this question a bunch of times too!)...
glad they are working on it though.

Oh sorry - my comments were actually questions. Can anyone confirm?

Can you transfer points and then bank them?

Can you bank points and then transfer them?

Can you transfer borrowed points?

Transferred points can be banked; however, banked or borrowed vacation points may not be transferred.

I just banked transferred points that I got with a resale. They didn't have my use year. They had a May use year and I have a Sept use year. I was told when I banked them, that they would retain their use year and would expire in May 2009 not Sept 2009. I was also told that they had a Jan banking window and I was just lucky I had called in Jan or I wouldn't have been able to bank them. They would then have expired in May 2008. MS had all this in their computer about the transferred points I had. I couldn't see them on their website so I was glad they had them listed. They also told me that I couldn't transfer any more points until Sept 2009 because I had used my transfer for 2008. I don't know if this is true but that is what they said.

The transferred points could not have had a May use year. There isn't a use year for May (or January, July or November).

If it's true that the banking window for the transferred points closed on January 31, then the transferred points must have had a June use year and they must have originally been from the 2007 use year. (June use years run from June 1 to the following May 31).

I don't understand how you could have used your one transfer per use year for 2008, since the transferred points were originally from 2007 and with a September use year, you are still within your 2007 use year as well. Only current use year points may be transferred. I think you used up your transfer for the 2007 use year and still have a transfer available for the 2008 use year.

Unless you misunderstood, the CM did not give you correct information.

Yes, by 'available' I meant when the UY starts. So if your vacation plans are for night stays within UY x, you may use UY x's points for that reservation at the 11-month mark for your home resort or at 7-month out for any DVC resort.

I didn't understand that either. I never did a transfer, I only banked my aquired transferred points into 2008-2009. I did ask for a trade into II for Oct 2008, but it is wait listed. Is that considered a transfer? I will have to call and ask them about this so I can understand.

I guess you are right about the May/June use year. I guess she was telling me I had to use them by May 31 and I thought she meant it had a May use year.

Thanks for the info
Merilyn
