When is the best time to rent points - meaning the cheapest?

The per-point cost is usually lowest at the last minute, i.e. when people have a res they can’t use and are desperate to get something for it as opposed to letting it go unused.

The points per night cost will be lowest during the month of September, starting in 2023, with January and late May being 2nd lowest.

The cost for renting a reservation from an owner made with points is all determined by the owner. Each owner sets their own price and terms. There are a lot of things that go into pricing which includes the resort and how far out you are looking to book a trip.

When points are expiring, owners will sometimes take less for last minute reservations if rooms are still available for someone looking to rent. However, when booking a DVC reservation, the farther out you are from your trip, the better chance you have to get something.

So, while it may save you a few dollars to wait, that can backfire as there may be nothing available left to book that will meet your needs. And, thank you for not including anything about a trip you may be taking as that would not have been allowed!!

There are two different factors involved: (a) how many points are required for the reservation, based on the point chart for that particular resort and those particular dates, and (b) how much you have to pay per point.

So first you have to know how many points are needed.

Then you need to know how much you would pay per point.

If you are renting from an agency, their website might show that they charge more for reservations which are between 7 months and 11 months out. For example, it might be $20 per point if the reservation is between 7 months and 11 months out, and $19 per point if the reservation is less than 7 months out.

If you are renting from an owner, they decide how much to charge per point.

Sometimes someone already made a reservation which they can't use and they want to rent out that reservation rather than cancel it to get their points back. The closer it is to check-in date, the more the price might drop.
