we have a hire car; however would the boat be quicker/easier?

How often do they run?

I would definitely take the boat; from what I've been reading, traffic is terrible around DTD, but even if it wasn't I'd still take the boat - I think it's one of the perks of staying at POR and POFQ.

I agree. Just be prepared to have a wait. You may not be able to get on the first boat that comes, especially at busy times. I have waited for as long as the 4th boat. I believe they run every 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the time of day.

It takes about 20 minutes to get from DTD to POR and POR to DTD. The boats stop at POFQ in both directions. It stops there before POR in the DTD->POR direction. It stops at POFQ after POR in the POR->DTD direction. I think this cuts about 5 minutes or more off the trip when getting on/off at POFQ. It took a while I thought when staying at POR, but POFQ might seem better. I was surprised at how slow it was compared to the MK boats and the water taxis at Universal.

The boat is not fast and often has a long wait. Even with the traffic I think the bus is faster. In fact the kids in our party HATED the boat because at 6 and 9 years old it seemed to them to take forever. After the first trip they begged us not to take the boat again. Coming back from DTD however there was no wait and the adults found the evening boat ride to be very relaxing. Either bus or boat are going to be better choices than driving. You don't want to deal with the traffic and parking.

We rode the boat ONE time to DTD when we stayed at POFQ. It was so loud our ears rang for a couple of hours after we got off of it. We found on that trip that relying on Disney transportation when in a time crunch just isn't the way to go so we have rented a car for each trip since then. Yes, it's a little more money but being able to stop by Target/WM on the way from the airport and being able to leave directly from the park when returning vs. riding bus back to resort for DME is worth it IMO.

We've taken it a few times and I would plan on more like 25-30 minutes once you're on the boat. We always were able to get on the first boat at POR but sometimes had to wait for the second or even third leaving Downtown Disney. It's a great ride and definitely less trouble than parking, and if you're in a hurry don't forget there's also a bus.

Love the boat and so much better than driving. The slow ride is lovely and if you're lucky you'll get an entertaining pilot.

I've never waited longer than a second boat.

We actually prefer to take the bus from POFQ. We may ride the boat back to the resort after if we're in no hurry. But the wait for the boat--and room on a boat--can be very long. If you're taking the boat as a way to relax, enjoy the scenery, do something different, it's fine. If you're looking at it as an efficient mode of transportation, there are better options! I'm actually always surprised at how people rave about the boat transportation, about it being a HUGE perk for staying at either PO resort. Much as we love POFQ, the boat is definitely not one of the reasons!

One person's choice is great for one but not so great for another . Both ways are good. There have been times we had to wait for a bus.
