DD9 is at the emergency room with DH. This morning she started complaining of shortness of breath and her chest was hurting. Called her dr and they said take her to the ER. The ER doctor told DH he thinks it is probably plurisy...they are going to do an xray and ekg just to be sure its not something else.

I have heard of this before but am not sure really what it is, and I was under the impression only older people got it, not children. :confused3

Pleurisy is an inflamation of the sacs surrounding the lungs. It is very painful. The most common cause is a bacterial infection, but there can be many other causes. It is not something that happens to old people. I would suggest you Google it to find more info. I've had pleurisy twice and it is not fun. Hope your DD gets better really soon!

My dad had it when he was young. He's 73 now and remembers it really well. I want to say he was under 20 yrs old but I can't remember exactly how oldhe was. He did say it's painful, but it is very treatable. It's not that common overall, but every year I hear of a few cases.

I had pleurisy when I was a child. In my case, the doctors thought I got it because I had been playing in piles of leaves that likely were contaminated with mold or fungus. It was unpleasant but didn't last as long as the doctors warned us that it might. I haven't had it since. The doctors did imply that it was more common in older people, but it isn't totally uncommon in children.

I have had it a couple of times, usually when I get the flu followed my pneumonia.

It sucks, feels like you can't breathe and is painful. Follow the doc's orders to a T. I think it is water, water, water and deep breathing even though it hurts if I recall, but don't quote me. I was getting over pneumonia so my treatment may have been different.

It did take awhile before it is gone.

HUGS to your dd.

I've had it twice myself when I was in my 30's--it's very painful. I thought I was having a heart attack. I was given cough syrup with codeine to stop the coughing which helped me heal.

I hope your daughter is feeling better soon!

I had it last year... went to a bevy of doctors before a pulmonologist told me that he saw nothing wrong, but that probably means it is pleurisy. Darned uncomfortable, but luckily it wasn't overly painful to me (but then again, I didn't think a slipped disc in my back, which required surgery to remedy, was remarkably painful, either).

Hopefully your daughter gets better quickly.
