Hi...first post to this forum!

My family moved to Florida last year, into our new house last month and now we're in the planting state of mind.

We have a local grower of plumeria and bought my mom a beautiful plumeria tree for mother's day. The grower said that particular variety will grow to be about 15' tall.

Now it's our turn. Was interested in finding others who have plumeria trees-what variety do you have, how tall. We were in AK Memorial Weekend, and found a few trees that smelled wonderful (and looked even better). Smart us, we took pictures to bring back to that grower to get trees or cuttings.

I think the future holds us having about 6-8 trees, with various shades of reds and pinks.

Any thoughts?

Plumeria trees are wonderful! I associate that wonderful fragrance with Hawaii. I bought one of the cutting stocks at Epcot last year. It is supposed to be yellow with rose colored edging. It didn't flower last year, but has a huge bud stock on it right now. I can't really answer your question about growing in Florida because up here in the frozen northland, we can only grow that kind of thing indoors. It does seem to be pretty easy once it gets going. I lost one before I got one to grow though.

You can get some info from the grower that has a booth at DTD. Their website is www.justplumeria.com. They are excellent. Are you here in Orlando or somewhere else in Florida. I would like to see what other vendors have that is available.

Bob,

I'm in Seffner. The grower's website is www.exoticplumeria.com. It is amazing walking through their grounds, lots of gorgeous trees. I'm a complete newbie to growing, so I'll spend the extra on a plant as I'm not comfortable starting from a cutting.

Our entire yard is filled with Plumeria's - all colors and many in pots...we have red, hot pink, yellow, rainbow, yellow w/pink centers, pink with yellow, white....lots!! Aside from orchids these are my favorite....

being on the gulf we don't have to deal with many frosts.....the ones we have seen at WDW I am suprised have made it through the frosts CF gets...but most do look kind of puny - not full of branches...

actually these are very easy to grow from a cutting...

DH cuts branches all the time and starts new trees/plants....

rangebob - Thanks for the link. I had wanted to look these people up for a while. There's actually an "s" at the end, though. justplumerias.com. It was enough for me to track them down. I just didn't want anyone else to be confused.

Thought I would post a few pics! :)

now in the winter these suckers look horrid!! I always look forward to April for that is when ours start to show the green leaves!!

Yes, as an old Hawaii girl, I remembah that when they trees drop their leaves they look DEAD!
But oh the scent of blooming plumeria!

Thanks for the websites.
Any one know how large the 3 gallon trees are for $19.99 incl. shipping? I think that is a great price and I'm ready to order one for old time's sake. I always bring cuttings home from Hawaii...and if you don't overwater them, they really do eventually bloom! But I am older now and lots more impatient. I grow them indoors of course, here at 9000 feet!

Thanks for those pictures, they're beautiful. I'm gulf side, too.

We were at Epcot yesterday and the smell got us on the way in, so we looked up and saw these HUGE plumeria trees, just starting to sprout the flowers. Amazing what you don't notice!

Now that we live here, we want to grow the fun plants! I'm missing my tulips, but the plumerias are so easy. Grower said, dry soil, direct sunlight. That's perfect for me.

Now, if I could only find out the name of the lilies that grow wild up in MD/VA, this climate is perfect for them year round. Orange-thought they were tiger lilies, but I've since found they're not!

Lilly - where on the Gulf Coast do you live? I am in Clearwater. :)

I just bought a pulmeria cutting at the F&G festival a few weeks ago and so far (even though it's only been 2.5 weeks) it looks really good! The leaves are growing like crazy and it looks really happy. I'd like to eventually have a bunch (like Lillygator), I love plumeria....fell in love with them on our honeymoon in Maui last year. :sunny:

Hi! We are in Sarasota - and we bought a few cuttings and the F&G show too - DH just couldn't help himself!!

My DH just cut down two of the plumeria trees....!

We are putting in a pool so they had to go - :(

Are you talking about daylilies(Hemerocallis fulva)? Some call them ditch lilies.
Pretty prevalent up north.
Oh, and lillygator, I'm deep in plumeria-envy! :flower3:
