Pleasure Island Closing Night Clubs

It's the fact that a person had free reliable transportation to PI and DIDN"T have to watch their alcohol consumption that made the dance clubs at PI such a wonderful thing. I just had to make sure I wasn't spinny on the bus :rotfl:

You're right, most vacationers will not leave Disney property in search of dance clubs. Disney must think the market is too small to make a difference. Yes, there are other entertainment venues, but for me, I desire loud techno with an awesome light show and rotating dance floor. Now there is nothing like that and it deeply saddens me.

I'm tellin ya...mark my words, in a few years you just might see Mannequins II popping up close to Disney:banana:

I just got back from spending the weekend at WDW to go to the Adventurers Club and my husband and I stayed offsite for the first time ever. We liked it much more than I expected! If Disney gives us fewer reasons to spend our evenings on Disney property then I won't feel a bit bad choosing a hotel that's more convenient to the nighttime entertainment. Plus, on this trip we ate at DTD twice and did a little shopping while we waited for the Club to open and we wouldn't have if the Club wasn't there. We may not be in the majority but I talked to several other people during our trip that felt the same way. Not to mention all the locals who love the Club and said they wouldn't go to DTD again once the Club is gone.

The benefits to staying on site aren't as good as they used to be, and lately the Club was the primary reason we've stayed onsite for every trip. When it's gone I doubt we'll stay onsite again - we paid far less this trip for a much larger (and nicer) room.

It may be chump change on an individual basis, but when all of us STOP spending that money at Disney and either save it or spend it somewhere else?

I agree. I'm guessing half the crowd at PI are locals. We pay $55/year for the AP and that by itself is not profitable for Disney when they get $22 per person from the tourist half. But us locals are what keep the place going. We're the ones pumping $2,000 to $10,000 of liquor money into their pockets. We're the ones dining out at DD. When it's off-season (and indeed, most of the year is off-season), we're the ones holding up the bar!

Whether one's love is limited to the AC or to the dance clubs, most of us no longer have a reason to drive all the way out to WDW and if we don't have a reason, we're not going.

When I was in there last Tuesday night and was able to survey the place since it was completely empty, I came away with the same impression. There is just way too much quality in the place. It is themed beyond belief. Are they really going to tear it down? They supposedly can't take out the revolving floor. The electronics are all built-in.

I too have a sneaking suspicion that Mannequins II will pop up.....right in the same place! It's a shame they're going to close it first and drive everyone away when they could just leave it open to generate revenue!

It does make you wonder, although I think it's wishful thinking. All the plans they have released thus far have had things where the clubs aren't. I don't understand why you would close everything at once. I think most people expected a phased closure with BET(if you can call fast talking music) and motion being the first(no loss there)

The rumors I heard were that it was supposed to be a phased shut down and then they changed their mind for some reason. Why let buildings sit empty for 18 months when it could be generating revenue! It just doesn't make sense.

I just heard that Kevin Lansberry has been in the AC preventing people from handing out literature to save the club. People are trying to get the word out about it closing and he is trying to stop them! I only hope I see the day he gets fired for what he is doing

I don't understand??? What are they going to build in place of Pleasure Island, and what are the main reasons behind all this?
This is ludicrous!!!

It's not Kevin Lansberry himself. It's just Disney security. But yeah, it's happened.

That's wierd... I don't remember DIsney harassing anyone during the couple of Mr Toad protests I went too... I loved the protest T-Shirt...

I guess they didn't care when people were paying admission to parks.

And paying for admission to Pleasure Island? That's different how?

Actually my sources spotted him on a Segway a few weeks back outside the A/C tryin to prevent the distribution when this first started and he was heckled initially -- when he returned ... he came with Disney Security.

The person handing out business cards is a friend of mine. I was standing inside the AC right next to her right outside the library door in the main salon. when two security CMs in shirts and ties, quietly pulled her aside to speak to her. Neither of their name tags read "Kevin" and the incident never left the lower level of the AC.

Kevin Lansberry may have been around the Island that night and he might have been heckled, but the "distribution of leaflets" reports are greatly exaggerated accounts of a very quiet, discreet encounter with my friend. I was standing right next to her, and heard it. (and had a pocket full of those business cards myself). The AC management and cast have told us that no one else has "gotten into trouble" for distribution of materials, and indeed, we've seen no other printed materials around the AC or PI.

I don't know what happened outside the club that night, but inside, unless you were standing right next to it, you'd never have even known it happened. Not nearly the scene people have been making it out to be.

Would be the first time I was fed half-correct or unsubstantiated info! And it prob won't be the last.

That aside, Anyway you slice it.. They (Disney) and he (Kevin) are going about this about as wrong as you possibly can

Agreed!

And now there are rumors that they're trying to prevent people from recording video inside the AC now. At a time when it seems EVERYONE is recording because they want to preserve their memories of the experience.

I haven't seen any of that first hand, so I can't verify if it's true. But if it is, it's gonna get ugly.

Actually I see what happened.. someone forwarded me Brandon's
mass email about that night .. which I read as 'a first hand account' from the person sending it to me.. and NOT with the correct attribution to Brandon.

Sorry about that.. in this case my own fault for speed reading.

I saw it a week ago today. It was while the girl from the "Save the Club" youtube video was there. A couple of manager types kept coming downstairs and telling people not to film. The next night she wasn't there and they didn't say anything to the people filming. I don't know if it was just because she was there and they were afraid she was going to film another "Save the Club" thing or if they're not going to allow any filming from now till the end. I certainly hope they don't intend to stop all taping, though, because once the Club closes those videos will be wonderful reminders of the place!

I really think they are handling this very badly. They don't seem to realize (or care) that many of us are very attached to the Club and we want to film there in the time we have left so we can have a taste of it even after it's gone. I can understand why they might not want "Save the Club" videos filmed inside their property but it's awful if they stop letting people record for their own personal use.
