I am new to the forum and I am considering renting points from a DVC member. I do not mean to be overly cynical, but how do I prevent being ripped off? Is there some sort of feedback system that I could reference? Thanks for any help.

First of all, welcome to the DIS and most especially to the DVC Forum!

Renting points requires trust on both sides of the transaction. If an owner wants to "rip you off" there is nothing you as the renter can do to prevent it. The owner always retains control of the reservation.

My advice to renters is to ask for references. It is also a good idea to read some of the posts made by the person you decide to rent from to get a feel for the person.

If you are the kind of person who will lose sleep over the possbility of being scammed, don't rent - it's not worth it. Go through Disney or a Travel agent.

FWIW, I have only read about a few bad experiences from those who have rented using DIS contacts. IIRC, there were an equal number of "bad" owners and "bad" renters. Nearly all have had good experiences and many have ended up becoming members.

Ask for references!

Thanks for the information. Good luck with Atkins as well! I hope you reach your goal. Let me ask you. I have read that the renter can often take advantage of the discounts the owner wouldhave access to such as the discounts on the ultimate park hoppers. How could I receive this discount. Also, is Disney aware that the person staying in the resort is renting the villa from a DVC member? Has anyone reported problems at the counter at check in time? Thanks so much for any information.

Technically, renters are not entitled to the DVC member perks & discounts. That said, it's almost a given that your room key/resort ID will say "DVC Member" on it. That's all you need to get most discounts. You'll probably get a list of them in your welcome packet. You can ask about the 10% discount on UPH tickets if you plan to purchase those type of tickets. It's up to the discretion of the CM, but again, I haven't heard of anyone staying on points being denied the discount.

Probably. But I don't think they care.

I'm positive you would be treated the same as any other guest of the resort whether you are a member, a renter or a cash guest.

We rented points for our trip Sept 28-Oct 2, 2003 for BCV. We rented from someone on the rent/trade board. I would look for someone who has been on the DIS for quite awhile, people who post frequently like this place & will not want their DIS reputation tarnished (that's just my opinion). Anyway, we rented a studio @ BCV, when we checked in we were greeted with a "Welcome Home" even though we were renters. We were given a folder that told about DVC discounts @ restaurants, etc. We never took advantage of that, main reason, we're big chickens & were afraid that someone might ask to see our member card or something. Renting is a great way to go & we loved the DVC resorts.

Warning, we liked staying in a DVC resort so much, we just signed on 180 points @ SSR. You have been warned!!!

It's not uncommon for DVC members to "give" vacations to friends / family / colleagues. Functionally, this process is the same as a rental--the member calls DVC and makes a reservation in the name of the guest who will actually be staying at the resort.

I'm not sure if CMs at the resort can even see the names of both the DVC member and the holder of the reservation, or if they just see the name on the reservation. Either way, a CM would be taking a pretty big leap to assume that the name on the reservation is a "renter" rather than just a friend or relative of the DVC member.

Yep, consider yourself double warned! :wave2: I rented at BWV in May of this year to "save" and now I'm $18,000 poorer! But I have no regrets at all, not one iota, I LOVE being a member and (like so many others here) now I wish I joined sooner.

:cool1: :thewave: :cloud9:

We rented in the spring of 2003. I was nervous about it, but frankly, it was a truly wonderful experience!

We received the same treatement as a DVC member. Our keycard gave us the discounts, and we got the "welcome home" as soon as we entered the premises.

For this year's trip, we were ready to rent again. But, friends gave us an early Christmas present. (We have great friends!) We're pretty determined that next time we will be using our own points.

Renting DVC is a great opportunity to experience the conveniences of staying onsite and immersing yourself fully in The World. I don't think we could go back to an offsite hotel, so be forewarned that renting could be hazardous in ways you never anticipated.
