I have friends going to the Shades of Green in November for 4 nights. Can someone explain the bus/transportaion service to the parks from there? Is it the same as with the other resorts? Can they use Magical Express?

I'm not sure about the buses to the parks, because I've never stayed at the Shades of Green, but I did a search and found that Magical Express does not service the resort.
I know from my trips to WDW their buses to the parks go to a different area than the WDW buses as there are no bus stops for Shades of Green at any of the parks.

Found my answer at shadesofgreen.org. There is a bus that runs to the TTC only, and then guests take the bus/boat/monorail from there to their desired destination. (It's a pretty nice website, btw) :thumbsup2

We just returned from SOG. There is one route that takes you to the TTC. Then you can take the monorail or boat to MK, monorail to Epcot, and buses to other places. There is a route that does run from SOG to MGM, AK, Blizzard and Typhoon but it is very unpredictable at best. I really thought that SOG would have improved their bus schedule from our last stay 2 years ago. But they sadly have not. I suggest using as much of Disneys transportation as possible. We waited almost an hour at MGM after Fantasmic for the bus to come. The waterparks and AK had long been closed, so it surprised me that it took so long. We had an infant who really needed to get back to the hotel. We were not the only guests who were complaining either. We ended up taking a Disney bus back to the TTC and then the Shades of Green bus from the TTC to the hotel. AND WE STILL BEAT THE BUS FROM MGM!! :guilty:

Thanks for sharing your experience, Honey11dog. We have an upcoming stay at SoG planned this September, and I'm debating about whether or not to rent a car. We'll have an 11-month old when we go, and I don't want to do a lot of unnecessary waiting around with her.

In retrospect, do you wish you had rented a car? I've always stayed at a Disney resort before and just used their transportation. But I'd a bit concerned about relying on SoG's transportation, especially now that we have the baby.

By the way - do you know what time the SoG bus to the TTC started running?

Thanks in advance,

Disneyfriend

This time we drove our own car to Disney. Before we flew and never had a car with us. I did enjoy having the car at the Waterparks and Downtown Disney. But you can do without. Just use the SOG bus to the TTC and then take Disney transportation from there and vice versa. I think that the buses to the TTC began running at 8:30am. We never had trouble waiting for the SOG bus at the TTC. If you wanted to leave earlier you could go to the Poly and board the monorail. We never managed to get out any earlier than 8:30am with 3 kids. The only transportation problems we had were from MGM and AK. The bus to SOG only runs every hour. We got around this by taking a bus from there to the TTC and then the SOG bus there back to the hotel. I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you have any other questions.

It's only about a 10-15 minute walk from SOG to the TTC, or you can take an even shorter walk to the Poly and take the monorail to the TTC.

We were at SOG last Nov and also in '98. Both times we walked either to the Poly and caught the bus or monorail or to the TTC. We only used the SOG bus one time and that was to and from AK. The walk is about 10 minutes. We had our car parked at SOG and didn't move it the whole week. I don't think we waited for a bus for more than 5-10 minutes the whole week.

DD and I went last May, since it was just mommy and her I found the transportation difficult. If the party is all adults I could see it being just fine. They have a schedule they give you at check in and the busses are pretty accurate to the scheulde. That said unless there is a direct bus (like AK, MGM, DD) you have to get on and off a few times.

Example... to go to MK you have to get on the SOG bus, take it to the TTC, get off and walk to the Monorail and the same in reverse. As a single parent with a sometimes tired 5 year old it got difficult towards the end of the trip and I wish I would have rented a car to get right to the resort parking lot.

This next trip we are staying at POP. I am sure we will do SOG again when she is older as it is a beautiful hotel but we dodn't need the extra room yet.
