We are going to be in Mount Vernon in May. Is 4 hours enough time to enjoy Mount Vernon or is that rushing it. I want to be able to get back on the road for 1:00pm to head back home to CT. I do not want to hit rush hour traffic in NJ or NY so I want to take route 81 home and that is a 9 hour drive.

Since I don't know of any other "Mount Vernon" other than the one in Virginia...I'll see if I can help ya! Mount Vernon is one of my favorite places close to home.

I would say you easily could visit Mount Vernon in 4 hours (unless it is really crowded - like say a weekend). I've spent as little as 2 hours there and then on occasion almost the entire day (or so it seemed). The tour through the house is not long because it is a walk-through and they guide you out pretty quickly. If you hit the gift store and the visitor's center - that might take a bit longer.

Here's the website: http://www.mountvernon.org/ if you haven't checked it out yet.

Hope this helps!

I concur about 4 hours being sufficient time. The house tour goes quickly but there are out buildings and things concerning recent archeological digs, etc. So once you go through the house it will just depend on much time you want to roam the estate and find out things about George and Martha Washington.
