Please help me pick: AKL Concierge or Poly Concierge?

Hi,

I have to make a choice in the next couple of days, and I'm just at a stalemate. Transportation is not a big factor since we'll have a rental car, but I would appreciate any input on how the AKL and Poly concierges stack up against each other based on your past experiences.

Many thanks!

I have done both AKL and Poly concierge. They are both great. You wouldn't go wrong by either one of these.

With the Poly you can have either garden view or lagoon view. The view out the sliding glass doors is fantastic. You can see (to a far distance) Magic Kingdom and I think you can see the fireworks also from that location (of course this has been 5 yrs so my memory is foggy). Plus the room is so large. When you are there you can either use the monarail or walk to transporation which is 5 minutes away.

With our favorate is AKL concierge. You view out your sliding glass doors is animals. Giraffis, zerbra ect. The room is smaller for a deluxe room then the Poly. When you do the AKL conciege you can have the priviage to signup for the sunrise and sunset safari's. Both for a fee (sunrise $50 per person and the sunset $150 per person). If your doing AKL concierge these safaris is a must do. You have your own AKL bus. This bus doesn't stop at any other resorts. It goes to and from the major parks. Your wait could be from 5 minutes to 20 minutes. I have heard of longer waits (this is a minus for the resort itself:().

Both services can pre-arrange all your PS's 90 days in advance. Both are very good services.

Like I said which ever resort you pick you will not do wrong. They are both great.

I say do both if you have enough time. We have done both of them and it would be so hard for us to chose one over the other. Sometimes we just like staying on the monorail line. Last year we tried the AKL Concierge and just loved it. Very relaxing - but for myself I could not spend a whole week there as I would miss the monorail....so we broke it up a little.

All great suggestions! We just might go with splitting the stay. Based on what's been posted, it doesn't sound like we would go wrong with either choice.

Great discision. You will not regret it. Both are great resorts. Just a suggestion, :smooth: if you want to do one of the AKL safari's schedule your stay over one of those nights that the sunrise safari is being offered. :cool1:

There's actually a thread going about concierge information. Here's a link to the thread if you want to check it out Useful Concierge Info . I have heard some negative remarks lately about the Poly pre-planning staff. They were combined with one of the other resorts and it seems like there's been a bit of a communications issue. Other DIS'ers have reported not hearing back from anyone. It may just a temporary issue until they have their departments all combined, but it's worth mentioning.

If you are thinking of splitting your stay and want to participate in either the Sunrise safari or Sunset safari at the Animal Kingdom, you might just want to verify which days they are offered. I believe it's only once or twice a week.

If transportation is not a priority, then the AKL is the best.

The Polynesian is wonderful, and we'll be staying there the next time, because easy transportation is a priority for us.

Both concierge staffs are excellent, but I have a far easier time reaching the AKL staff. This is important when you're in the park and have a change of plans. For that matter, I thought the Boardwalk concierge staff was outstanding as well.

AKL staff bent over backwards for us. The Polynesian staff was wonderfull, too. The problem I had with the Polynesian was that the cleaning staff was horribly inconsistent. We had great service and abysmal service between two different cleaning people. The first woman was wonderful, always took care of everything we requested. The other was a nightmare. I practically had to chase her off when they attempted to open the door several times with the darn thing that bars the door from opening more than a few inches in place. This after her seeing the "Do not disturb" sign. What a dolt, and potential "Darwin Award" winner had she actually gotten in.

To top it off, when they initially brought us to the room from the AKL to the Polynesian, it was still dirty from the previous occupants. No doubt because of our potential Darwin Award candidate...

Finally, in room 3509 in Hawaii, there was a floor tile with some of the most horrible "staining" directly in front of the toilet. This is TMI, but important for anyone who stayed there who was even remotely familiar with the practice of personal hygiene. We scrubbed that spot for days and still didn't feel comfortable walking near it in bare feet.

They always say that they like to bring in foreigners to do work "that Americans don't want to do." This concept is entirely false at Disney. Apparently no one wanted to clean that room properly. It took a long time for whatever it was to eat through that marble tile.

We didn't complain to the management. We simply posted the review on the internet. Everyone else was great, however.

The only time I ran into someone preparing our room at the AKL was when we "met" one of the staff leaving the room after placing two beautifully wrapped "Pal Mickey's" that we ordered for our children along with "Welcome" cards from "Safari Mickey and Minnie" that were a surprise for all of us.

Now that was magic...

Now I don't mean to be too down on the Polynesian, I'm venting over some of that stuff as it is. The Polynesian is wonderul, (heck, we're going back) and would likely beat out the AKL if they've fired "Maidzilla". Yet, if it's a draw, I have to give the edge to the AKL because of my experiences.

One final note: AKL has the best Espresso Machine in their lounge. If caffeine means anything to you, stay at the AKL.

Go for the AKL and do the Safari. Sunrise Safari is Tuesday and Saturday, I think. I know for sure Tuesday is one of the days!
