You all have helped me more than you know already because I have read many posts regarding this issue. However, I would like some more specific feedback.

So we are doing two rooms at the Coronado and have the quick service plan. It’s already a forgone conclusion that I am going to attempt some sort of upgrade. The question is what combination of people in rooms and which plan.

We have 7 in our party. Four actual adults, and a disney adult-10 year old. Then we have the 2 disney kids (7 and 3). Right now I have my in-laws and my 10 year old in the other room. However, I was toying with the idea of moving either my husband out into the other room (i’ll Have to call and deal with them on the phone and I know this is a process because i’ve Done it once before) or one of my kids at least and upgrading to the deluxe plan. Right now, I think we have 5-6 ADRs scheduled and one is sci-fi diner so it’s not all that expensive. We also have Be Our Guest for lunch. If we got the deluxe plan, I might try to add in a few dinner reservations too when we got closer but I realize finding reservations will be tough now. I then have crystal palace, Turkey house, Biergarten (for the men....they like the sound of it) too. I don’t think we would ordinarily get appetizers or desserts but would definitely have a drink. We might get an appetizer or dessert once or twice since it’s free but we almost never do when we’re at home unless it’s a salad or soup.

If I switch my husband out of the room then I could keep the two disney kids and share their meals according to the deluxe “loophole” but I feel really weird about that. I consider myself an honest person and don’t want to do something if it’s not legitimate. However, if I keep my husband and I both in the room and move out one kid (the cost isn’t huge to upgrade but still adds $150 over 8 days), then it’s almost too much food. We are staying 8 nights but are leaving first thing in the morning on the day of departure and won’t even eat so it’s a complete waste unless I find a way to split up these meal plans. So in order to keep it simple I’ll ignore the kids for now who will be able to share a plan easily if I split them up. THat means I’ll have 3tsx2x8=48 table service credits. 48/5 comes out to a little more than 9 meals per person. We aren’t doing any 2 credit meals (I have a kid with autism and a 3 year old....fine dining isn’t my thing with them but they are pretty good in restaurants that have kid friendly things going on). We may add a night out for ourselves or inlaws if we can get a reservation at the time (inlaws babysit while we go out). Since we have parkhoppers the flexibility is there. Now, if I only did myself then we’d have to remove some TS meals or pay out of pocket. I’m very close to considering this possibility since I think we could do without some of the meals. Sometimes dining out with kids is more work. However, I like the idea of a nice lunch break away from the August heat which is why I scheduled these ADRS to begin with. If I dropped one adult off the deluxe plan then that would save me $500. That’s a big savings and we’d get the quick service credits from the other room which we could really use for breakfast or whatnot. If I keep all 4 of us in the room it’s around $1300 total or $1150 for 2 adults and one child.

The regular dining plan is all we really need but then we’d have to just use snack credits for breakfast. I think that’s probably doable most days but I think the kids will want the mickey waffles at least once (I didn’t schedule lunch reservations once or twice that week). Anyway, to upgrade both rooms is about $900. It just seems like “free dining” isn’t really free anymore with these options because we’re still spending a lot on food.

What would you do?

Free dining is no where near free, 99% of the time you would be better off with a room discount instead of free dining. I understand it if you like it as a prepayment but if your objective is to save money, you may want to keep your eyes open for a room discount and do the math.
Anywhoo, if you are going to do the fd, I would absolutely have your husband "stay" with the inlaws. I wouldn't feel bad about it at all.

Hmm...something to think about. I had the summer fun offer booked before and we had only saved $400 over our original rack rate booking. So I figured the dining plan for 7 would save us more than $400. I definitely want to be able to enjoy the experience of disney without worrying about food all that much while I’m there. Either way I have the cash saved up in a separate account to pay for the most expensive option. So of course I can do it but I also don’t want to go hog wild and waste $500 when it’s not necessary. I can pay OOP for sci fi diner out of that account and it wouldn’t be much. Another reason I want to keep the dining is that my father-in-law is a little reluctant about this trip (MIL wanted to come with us but she had to talk FIL into it). He’s somewhat excited now but the cost of food could ruin his trip even if he thinks I’m paying for it. This way I can just tell him it’s “free.” No one in the family really knows what I’m doing. They just leave it up to me.

What if you just upgrade 2 adults an 1 child to the regular plan? That would give you 16 adult TS credits which would cover your 3 buffets for all the adults and the kids are covered as well. You would have an extra adult credit and an 2 extra kid credits that you could use toward Sci-Fi to help cover that cost. Then you still have 72 QS credits between the 7 of you. This only costs $400. You could add a date night for the two couples for a lot less than $750.

BTW lunch at BoG is a QS credit, not a TS credit.

That’s very true. We also have a Hollywood and vine fantasmic package. But I would probably remove Biergarten in favor of that if I went that route. Biergarten is arrival day and Epcot has great quick service food so I’ve been told. We’d peobab rather explore than eat that day anyway. Oh I also added the Mexican restaurant one day too at Epcot. But again I’m not as sold on that. I wanted a few character meals for the kids experience. I honestly think we are going to be sick of restaurant food and long for just some regular stuff.

What if upgraded the 3 adults in the other room? That would give me 4 meals and most of a 5th and pay OOP for kids.

The OOP price for the kids at the buffets would be more than the $4/night upgrade for the DDP. You could put one of the kids in with the 3 adults. That puts you at about $584. BTW the kid you put on that reservation doesn't have to sleep there.

Don’t forget to include the extra adult charge if you put your husband with your in laws. Not sure how much it is, but it would make a difference.

Ok thank you everyone. Check my thinking once again.

I think I’m going to see if I can move my Disney adult son back in with us and upgrade our room. We are staying at Coronado and I believe it sleeps 5 if one is a little kid so I’m thinking they’ll allow that. Then I want to upgrade our room. That means we will have 24 adult credits and 16 child credits. My 10 year old can likely order off the kids meal a couple of times and maybe help use up the child credits which we will have extra (it’s only $4 a day savings to take them off so it’s not worth switching the kids). I am sure that is not “technically allowed” by disney but I don’t feel bad about doing that. I am paying for an adult plan for him and using the adult plan on actual adults. If I went out to eat and paid OOP I’m sure I could order off the kids menu for him or split a meal with him from my own plate. So if order an additional kids meal for the table, I feel it’s legitimate to use a child credit on his meal. Does this sound feasible or is Disney going to be examining my small 10 year old at restaurants. This is possibly one small deception that I do not feel bad about at all because I’m still paying for exactly what I’m ordering.

I think PP is correct, but it does only apply to REAL adults over 18.
Yes I think that’s what I’ve read in the past. I don’t think they’re trying to discourage families with teens as much as a bunch of adults bunking up in one room.
