I felt rather silly out there planting things in 40-something degree weather after dark, but it's when we could plant them, so that's when we did it. 
I dug the holes yesterday afternoon, then realized we needed topsoil because just an inch down in the "bed" I reached clay. Didn't want lots of clay, wanted soil. So instead of planting anything yesterday, we ran errands to get soil and fresh mulch and by the time we got home it was near freezing and well after dark.
So, we decided to plant everything tonight.
Most of what I planted were bulbs (two kinds of iris and one batch of freesia), but in the front of the bed I also planted some clusters of blue and white pansies. I'd post pictures, but it's dark outside (I was literally planting by flashlight )
I don't know if anything will make it very long, and I still have a couple of flats of pansies left to plant, but it was just too late and dark and I ran out of holes, so that'll be next weekend's project I guess if I can keep them alive in their containers until then.
The bulbs supposedly will like it getting cold, and we aren't likely (not impossible but not likely) to get frost now, so I'm hoping the pansies make it at least a little bit, and that nothing eats all my bulbs.
We'll see what happens.
