My DH and I have registered for the January, 2011 half-marathon. It'll be a 1st for both of us. We're planning to bring our kids (ages 6, 4, 2). My MIL has announced that she wants to come and I think my parents want to come, too. I'm not sure how to arrange the hotel rooms....
My MIL is a "low energy" person. She's Pooh-sized, diabetic, and doesn't get around well. She tends to stay up late and sleep late. When we went to Disney with her (January, 2008), she had an adjoining room. She'd say hello to us in the morning as we were leaving for the parks and then call us around lunch time. We'd meet up for lunch and then take the kids back for a nap. She'd have dinner with us and late afternoon touring. It wasn't really an issue because we did our own thing and she did hers. She perceives that it was a great trip (we spend minimal time together). We didn't really know about ADRs then so we didn't make as many as we should have. Obviously, we'd need her to commit to eating certain meals with us for ADRs this time. She is absolutely NO help with the kids. Having her along doesn't really change what we do because she just tags along when she feels like it.
My parents are more helpful with the kids. My mom has chronic emphysema and tends to over-estimate her ability to keep up. She gets exhausted but doesn't admit it. On our trip together it was 95+ degrees (in May!) and she eventually agreed to an ECV. She struggled to keep up and they ended up going home (to NY) early. My parents are great babysitters and my kids are very close to them. Despite the fact that we live about an hour away from my parents and only 10 minutes from MIL, my kids are much closer to my parents. My parents strongly dislike my MIL (with good reason) but are willing to deal with her being there. My mom can be a bit of a martyr and they'll want to do everything with us.
We will likely stay in at least a one bedroom villa so my DH and I can have a separately bedroom. Ideally we would stay in a 2 bdrm villa with my parents (they'll share the 2nd bedroom with the big kids) so they can help with the kids on marathon day. I would then have my MIL get a studio nearby. I'm worried that this will cause hard feelings. There is already a certain amount of jealousy on both sides regarding the grandchildren.
I'm just not sure what the best arrangements would be. We aren't DVC members so I don't think we'll be able to score a Grand Villa...
Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks!
Amanda
