Hi and welcome to my nervous journey through arranging a secret VR in February!
My name is Jay and I am a proud husband to Amanda, and dad to 2 special little girls.
So, mine is a long story, so I apologize in advance if I bore anyone along the way!!
Amanda and I met in 1998, at that time I lived in my native UK and she lived in Michigan. Our road to being together didn't exactly run smoothly, in fact, for a while, any relationship between seemed doomed, but in 2001, I went to Michigan and we started dating.
It wasn't easy juggling a long distance relationship and we both spent a small fortune travelling back and forth. For a while I was in MI for 3 months (which is the longest I could stay) flew home to the UK, and flew back a few weeks later for another 3 months! Let's say I clocked up a lot of airmiles in those days!
In 2005, it all went wrong when immigration stopped me entering the US. Apparently my frequent trips for long periods flagged me up as a potential illegal immigrant (even though I'd never overstayed my visa) and they shipped me back to the UK 4 hours after touch down.
That summer we went on vacation together to Europe and got engaged and in 2006, Amanda moved to the UK. She was given a visa that gave us a few months to get married or she would be sent back, so we decided to have a quick "legal wedding" to meet the Visa requirements and planned our "real wedding" later that year.
Then life threw us a curve ball. A family crisis happened and my cousin's two special needs children needed a new home. We'd been married just 2 months when we were told the kids were "unadoptable" because of their difficulties and they'd be split and sent to 2 different foster homes. Amanda and I couldn't bear the thought of that, so we decided to adopt them. Needless to say, the "real wedding" never happened! My wife never had her big day, a wedding dress, a cake, a meal, nothing!
So fast forward, and we've been married 5 years now. Our kids are our lives and we wouldn't change anything for the world but I've always felt my wife missed out. She's never complained, never said that she feels she missed out, but I know in my heart that every woman dreams of her big day and Amanda just never had it.
This summer we booked a vacation to Disney World. We've had a tough year which I won't bore you with, and we truly deserved it! Having saved up (secretly) for 5 years to give Amanda her day, I decided to do it at Disney and give her the dream day she deserves!
At this point, she has absolutely no idea, but I've booked a memories collection WVR....so here I am, planning this big surprise all on my own, hoping I get everything perfect!
I'm looking forward to sharing my plans with you and hearing your views!
