I posted this over on Community Boards, but it was suggested I post here as well, so here it is. I'm not trying to spam the boards or anything :)

I have reached a point in my fitness journey where I really think that a gym membership is necessary to reach my goals. I have been shopping around for a while, and have narrowed my choices down.

I am seriously contemplating Planet Fitness. The local branch doesn't seem to have any serious complaints lodged against them and the location is clean and close to where I live (a big plus with gyms, I have found). I just wanted to get reviews from people who have actually used Planet Fitness.

So, what do you have to say about the gym? Good, bad, I don't care, I just want to know. Thanks!

I've used planet fitness before. The one near my parents house was open 24 hours a day. It was clean and fairly large, so it had most of the equipment you would realistically need. It also had a nice pricing option - I was up there for the holidays and it was something like 20/month with no contract so I just got myself a 1 month membership to keep in shape for the disney marathon - last thing I needed was a nice fall on some ice while doing a run to end that whole vacation.

I dont know anything really about the classes/etc they offer because I havent taken any of them.

I do personally want to buy one of those I pick things up and put them down shirts :)

Also for the most part the mix of people there was fairly wide. You had your athletes and people who knew what they were doing, about 25% were them, the other 50% were people who were on and off gym goers - knew how to do the exercises but didnt really have a focus, and about 25% seemed like they were fairly new out of the gate. People were either there in small groups or kept to themselves. I also tended to go either first thing in the morning or late at night. It was also the holidays so keep that in mind. Not sure what you're looking for in a gym, different people will have different things they find necessary.

Thanks for the review. I am going to go ahead and join. I'm not looking for classes, just a way to work in some light weights and conditioning. Signed up for my first official 10K and half marathon, and plan to do things right :thumbsup2

I'll add a thumbs up to Matt's review. I am not a member so my experience is limited to week memberships while on the road. Most are clean and really not that busy. Do not expect any one to come by and correct weight lifting flaws. I intervened with a guy lifting way too much chest press and no spotter. Scary, but I have seen similar at a well staffed upper end club, also.

I am not a member mainly because locally they are out of my normal commute paths.

I personally have never been there but a friend of mine was kicked out because they accused him of being a bodybuilder. Now keep in mind, he is ripped and looks great, but by no means is a bodybuilder. He was working on the weights, they told him there is no bodybuilding to be done there, and escorted him out and told him not to return. He now sticks with the YMCA.

I don't know if this is how all the Planet Fitnesses are, but this was his experience.

Huh? I think there is some of this story missing. If your friend was one of those people who yells every time he lifts a weight or drops the bar after every set maybe but just for lifting heavy I doubt they would say anything.

They do have a policy of no grunting or leaving a mess/stack of weights . So if you friend is a grunter or thinks body builders do not have to pick up all their weights used, then he may have been asked to leave.

Note you really have to grunt LOUD to create an issue at the club....

The club (at least the couple that I was at) disclosed this at the time of signing. Or maybe it was me wanting to know what a "lunker" was.

I agree there is something missing.
