So, has anyone had any trouble travelling with refrigerated meds? What do you use to keep them cold if "gel" isn't allowed for air travel??? I had planned on using those ice packs...

That won't be a problem. You are allowed to use gel pacs for medications that require refrigeration.
Here are some links to help you:
Link to Transportation Security Administration page about Medications.
Linnk to TSA general page about travel with disability/special needs.
In about 1/4 of the way down the page, it says:
"Additionally, we are continuing to permit prescription liquid medications and other liquids needed by persons with disabilities and medical conditions. This includes:

* All prescription and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, and aerosols) including KY jelly, eye drops, and saline solution for medical purposes;
* Liquids including water, juice, or liquid nutrition or gels for passengers with a disability or medical condition;
* Life-support and life-sustaining liquids such as bone marrow, blood products, and transplant organs;
* Items used to augment the body for medical or cosmetic reasons such as mastectomy products, prosthetic breasts, bras or shells containing gels, saline solution, or other liquids; and,
* Gels or frozen liquids needed to cool disability or medically related items used by persons with disabilities or medical conditions.

However, if the liquid medications are in volumes larger than 3 ozs each, they may not be placed in the quart-size bag and must be declared to the Transportation Security Officer. A declaration can be made verbally, in writing, or by a person's companion, caregiver, interpreter, or family member."

You should not have any problem because you won't be the only person who has traveled with these things before. We don't travel with any refrigerated medications, but do travel with DD's wheelchair seat and back, which contain a gel to provide pressure relief for her when she's sitting on them.
You could print out the pages if you are concerned (nice to have a back up).

Also, if you loose the links, you will find them on the air travel page in the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of this board.

I suggest keeping all of your medical items over the 3 ounce limit (including ice packs or gels, etc) together in one case or bag. Declare that bag to the screener when you go through security and tell them it has medical supplies over the 3 ounce limit.

For us they scanned the bag like usual and sometimes they will do a hand inspection of it after it was scanned.

I still carry my quart baggie of toiletry items under 3 ounces and put it in the plastic bins to be scanned but I am careful not to include it with my medical supplies. In other words I don't try to sneak in a big bottle of shampoo or make-up stuff with my medical supplies.;)

Have you checked out www.coolerconcept.com for Frio packs. I use the double wallet (hold two insulin bottles plus a Byetta pen) and travel at least six air roound trips per year and have never had any problem. And they come in assorted sizes work very well.
