What happens if you put down a deposit on a placeholder and then do not cruise within the next 24 months? Is your deposit automatically refunded to you or do you have to actively contact DCL to cancel your placeholder?

The placeholder should automatically cancel and you will be refunded. Note this is only true of a non-specific placeholder; once an actual date is assigned, you would need to pro-actively cancel before the PIF date or lose the deposit.

Enjoy your cruise!
