Pizza Delivery Tipping

Ok first off, this is hubby_of_newtodisney

I say that you tip a pizza delivery person somewhere around 10% or $1/ pizza. If it is just one pizza, I will tip $2. DD had a birthday party, and I thought that $5 for 5 pizzas was PLENTY. My theory is that whether the driver delivers 1 or 5 pizzas to a single location, his effort doesn't really change. (DW & DSIL were going to give almost $7).
My DW thinks it should be more like 15%, which I will only pay in NASTY weather.

(Sidebar--I tip 20% for good service at a restaurant, and more for great)

How much do you tip for pizza delivery?

I usually tip $1.00 per item.

We rarely just get 1 pizza, but when we do, we do $2-3.

I think $5, for 5 pizzas would be appropriate.

I tip about $1 per pizza as well so unless there are unusual circumstances (i.e. really bad weather) I think $5 for 5 pizzas is a resonable tip.

We usually get 1 pizza, and I tip $2. Our total is never over $15, and the deliverers are also getting a fee that I'm charged. I think for 5 pizzas, $5 is PLENTY.

I actually don't tip pizza delivery guys. When I worked at Domino's here in my town, I was what they referred to as a 'phone chick' I was the one that talked to you on the telephone when you ordered your pizza. I made minimum wage. I was expected to take phone orders, make pizzas, fold the pizza box, glue the fliers on the pizza boxes, cut the pizzas, box the pizzas, and then clean the joint up at the end of the night. I was not allowed to accept a tip from a pick up customer.

However, the delivery guys made $3-$5 MORE on the hour than I did. This did not include the tips that they received, and the mileage reimbursement that they got if they drove their private car (which paid them back their gas and wear and tear on their car). They were not expected to take orders, make pizzas, or clean up the restaurant. They came in, clocked in, delivered pizzas, and then clocked out.

So, no I don't tip them. I don't know how it is at other pizza places, but since that place is the only one that I order from, I don't tip.

You guys tip by the PIZZA???

I always tipped by the trip. When I order from the mom and pop place all the way across town I give the driver a straight $5, If I order from Pizza hut 2 blocks away I just give the driver $2-$3. Regardless of how many pizzas I order, come on they come in boxes and it doesnt really take much more effort to carry 3 boxes vs 1.

I tip 10 -15%.

$1/pizza sounds really cheap to me.

I always tip by the pizza. Saying you only tip by the trip is the same as saying you only tip your waitress for 1 meal, after all, she carried it out all at once.

Waitress trips are all the same distance, with drivers some trips can be a block away or some can be 10 miles away. It seems a bit different to me:confused3

Taxi "drivers" charge the same regardless of how many passengers get in, they charge by the trip(distance). IMO pizza delivery "drivers" are not food servers, they are "drivers."

BUT
She must be a great waitress if she could bring out 8 entries, 8 drinks, 8 salads and 8 deserts in one trip.

Every taxi I've ever been in charges per person per distance.

Well if I order 3 pizzas, from Dominos, for $15.00, and tip $3.00. That is 20%-right.

If I order pizza, from anywhere, I usually have a coupon. Rarely do I spend much more than $25 for 3 pizzas. So $3.00 isn't much less than 15%.

If I order 2 pizzas, at $10/ea, and add breadsticks--Thats 3 items=.$3 tip He prob. makes out a bit better.

It really equals out to be almost the same.:confused3

I will say that most drivers, thank me very much, and almost are suprised by the tip. So I must be doing OK.

I have not been in many, VEGAS... but it has always been based on distance.

I guess it can vary.

My basic point was that I tip the driver more if I know he drove my single pizza eight miles vs driving a couple pizzas two blocks.

Really? I've never noticed that. I've only taken cabs, in Vegas, and NYC, but I really thought they charged by the trip.

In fact, when we took a cap downtown Vegas, from the Flamingo, it was very close to the same amount, for 4 of us going, as it was for 2 of us returning.

Yep, but of course, I've never taken cabs in Vegas or NYC! The ones I've ever taken charge a regular rate per mile for the first person, then a reduced rate for the 2nd, 3rd, etc. Except in DC they charge based on zones, not miles.

Oh no, now I have to factor how far away the pizza place is into this? It is getting waaay to complicated!:lmao:

Domino's is only a couple of miles from my house. So, I don't order delivery very often. When I do, it's because the weather is nasty or it's a holiday. They get 50%.

Yes!!!

Where do I find the pizza tipping formula?

I hope it's not too complicated because I was never very good at math.
