What happens to Wil Turner, Orlando Bloom's character, in the 10 years later scene? I thought he was coming back for his once every ten years a shore thing with his lovely wife, but a friend of mine says that he's fullfiled his time as the Capt. of the Flying Dutchman and can therefore come back and live on land - he cites the green flash. I always thought the green flash was a sign of the Flying Dutchman. Which is it? I'm so confused.

Thanks,

CCT

There was a lot of speculation about this issue on the POTC 3 thread a while back. Information from Wikipedia as well as interviews with the writers suggest that Will is freed from his duty as captain of the Flying Dutchman and can live out the rest of his life with Elizabeth and their son. Here is some info from the Wikipedia site.......

Although Will has been saved, and the Dutchman crew have regained their humanity, Will is now bound to being The Flying Dutchman's captain: he must spend ten years in the netherworld ferrying souls to the other side. Will and Elizabeth have one day together and consummate their marriage on an island before Will must leave. Will entrusts Elizabeth with the Dead Man’s Chest containing his heart. Shortly after, Barbossa again commandeers the Black Pearl to search for the Fountain of Youth using Feng's chart, stranding Jack and Gibbs in Tortuga. Having anticipated Barbossa’s deception, Jack already removed the chart's center and sets sail in a small dinghy searching for immortality. In a post-credits scene set ten years later, Elizabeth and her son, William Turner III, stand atop a cliff overlooking the sea. A green flash heralds Will's return from the netherworld.

Filming finished on January 10, 2007 in Molokai,[16] and the first assembly cut was three hours.[17] Twenty minutes were removed, not including end credits, though producer Jerry Bruckheimer maintained that the long running time was needed to make the final battle work in terms of build-up.[18] A second unit shot at Niagara Falls.[19] One scene cut explained that if Calypso had greeted Davy Jones after his ten years of ferrying dead souls, then he would have been freed of his duty: in turn, Will is freed of his captaincy as Elizabeth remains faithful to him ten years later.[20]

Per the writers, he fulfilled his duty. Part of why Davy Jones was corrupt was due to Calypso not going to meet him after 10 years. She was the goddess of the sea who was known for messing with lives though. The flying dutchman wasn't always captained by a man w/o a heart. Davy Jones did that to himself after he was betrayed. That made the crew of the ship cursed too. I am not sure if they were convinced they needed to cut out the heart of the next captain because it was true, or because it was what they thought... they all were half mad if you noticed.

The green flash symbolizes the return of a soul from the dead... stated fairly early in the film while they are in the cold zone.

I've heard people say that because Elizabeth was there waiting Will would be free, but what was said in the movie was that the Flying Dutchman must always have a captain. Also it was said that he would only be allowed 1 day per every 10 years. The only way that he would not be captain anymore would be for someone to take his place and they must cut out their own heart to replace his and then he would die.

The green light is when a soul/pirate returns from the dead.

See, this is where I'm confused too. Who would become the Dutchman's captain then? And if the part they cut out was vital to the story (And Will not being the captain anymore is pretty vital!) don't you think they would have kept it in?

I wonder if the reason it got cut was because they decided to leave him on it. Who knows! In fact, I've also heard that Will and Elizabeth's story is over and they won't be in a 4th movie, and then I've heard that if there's a 4th movie they absolutely WILL be in it!

It's all so confusing!

Thanks for the reply's everyone.

I'm confused with this as well. If Wil Turner fullfiled his term as Capt. then who would become Capt.? It doesn't make sense.

Calypso decided the first time... why can't she do it again? She also knew full well that Will was going to be captain as well. I wonder if that was hinted in the scene that was cut. Agian when she charged Davy Jones to be captain, he had a heart... he wasn't 'undead' like he became. He cut out his own heart after she betrayed him. He stopped doing his job that she charged him with. Notice how after he died, the ship mates turned back to "normal". I think the purpose became corrupted when Davy was betrayed. So what used to have to happen on the ship, isn't necessarily true... just what Davy Jones messed it up into.

he's come back for his once every ten years thing.

The green flash is a sign of a soul coming from or going to the underworld. He was coming back.

He's still the captain, I think.

Thanks for the reply's everyone.

Before helenabear responded with her very logical explanation, I was going to say that will be explained in POTC4!

FWIW, Both Kiera Knightly and Orlando Bloom have both stated they show no interest in doing another Pirates movie. Each wants to move on to other things before they get type casted (since they are both so young). I believe the story with the 2 of them is done.

No the writers have said on their websight that he is free. They have said the part that made it crystal clear was cut......hopefully it will be on the DVD.

The green flash was supposed to make it very clear he was free but with the cut scene it didn't make it crystal clear. If you will remember the Flying Dutchman appeared time and time again in Dead Man's Chest and there was never a green flash. There was also no green flash when it appeared with Davey Jones in AWE.

So yes, he's free for good. As for the new captain that's kind of left out there for us to guess. Oh and also when Will returns he is NOT at the helm of the boat. He is NOT captaining which is another hint.

Yes, it was very logical helenabear, thanks.

I see your point, but I find it hard to believe that Orlando Bloom would get type cast into the role of Wil Turner. With his success in "The Lord of the Rings" movies and now this he could do just about anything he wants at this point.

Oooo, do you remember the web address? I'd love to check it out. I hope that they put those scenes back in when they release the DVD.

I'm glad that you pointed this out, because I never though of that. Whenever the Flying Dutchman appeared before, it just appeared, never with the green flash. Interesting.

Oh and also when Will returns he is NOT at the helm of the boat. He is NOT captaining which is another hint.

This didn't tell me anything. When I saw Wil standing there holding on to the rigging I took it that he had ordered someone else to main the wheel.

I want to know too. It seemed to me that if it was only for that one day, Elizabeth would not have been smiling and welcoming. She would have been more bittersweet.

I think the problem is that he already has been type casted and now wants to do what every good Brit actor does... is going to be in theater in London for a while ;)
If you look at his movies: Wilde, Blackhawk Down, Ned Kelly, LOTR Trilogy, Calcium Kid, Pirates 1-3, Haven, Kingdom of Heaven, Troy and Elizabethtown you can clearly see the pattern. He also did an indie film with his sister that I know little about.

Wilde was a bit part and probably shouldn't count. Calcium Kid wasn't even released to the US and was his only true comedy. Haven wasn't released in the US either, and while it wasn't comedy, it wasn't action. Elizabethtown was the last non-action he did but no one really got to see him in it (wasn't reviewed well for poor writing)

Out of the 13 major films he has been in (leaving out Wilde and the one shown at the Toronto Film festival) 10 have been action. I can see why he wants a break from this genre.

Back to Pirates though, the last clue in that he was back for good was that he returned at *sunset* not *sunrise* If he was back for one day only, he is given from sunrise to sunset to be with his love. Not the other way around.

I saw this last night...Thank You who ever posted to wait for the credits.

I thought it was only 1 night every 10 years. I also thought at sunset I would be happy & not be angry until the next day. It was so great.

I see you're saying now. Thanks for pointing that out. I can see why he'd want to move on to something else. And I never thought about Wil Turner returning at sunset and not sunrise. Thanks for pointing that out.

I saw this for the second time yesterday afternoon and when the credits started rolling everyone stood up and I yelled, "Wait, everyone sit down, there's something at the very end." I got the funniest looks. :rotfl2:
