Pirates: Disney Mobile for iPad 2, is it really free???

I know it is a free download but can you really play it without purchase.
I have downloaded other 'free' games before but you really can not get anywhere without spending $$$$.

Does anyone play this game???

I went ahead and downloaded it, seems as though you can play without purchasing extras.
