Pin Values: leave on card or take off?

Hi all!

I have quite a few pins I have purchased from Disney that are limited editions - like the special Halloween party pins that say limited edition on them.

I am going to build a pin board soon and want to start showcasing my pins instead of leaving them in my pin storage binder. I want to be able to see them!!

Right now I have all those special pins still on their cards. Do they lose values taking them off the cards? All my normal pins and my traded pins have no backs so obviously they aren't an issue, and any special pins I have traded for aren't on backings. It's really just any special pins I have purchased.

Over the years I have encountered some people (in the minority) who MUST have a pin on a card.

I don't care if a pin has the card or not. i buy/trade for a pin because I like it, not because it has a card (or not). Too, I've been selling a lot on ebay and find that if someone really wants a specific pin, they don't seem to care. (Good thing because I tossed most of my cards years ago)

IMO pins do not lose value if they are removed from the card.

When I first started trading I took all my pins off the cards and put them in Disney pin books. I regret doing that and now if I buy a pin I leave them all on the cards. But, for display purposes, that is obviously not practical. I know a lot of people who use some sort of acid free, archival type tape of some sort meant for scrapbooking to label their cards as to what pin came on it and they safely store away their cards keeping them flat while they display the pin. Then, if they ever decide to let go of the pin, they put it back on the card and sell/trade or whatever. It is nice if you have the cards on those special pins that have themed cards. I recently sold a pin on eBay that did not have the themed card (which was noted in my auction) and the buyer had a fit when it came in the mail. Wanted the card to match the rest of his set. Everyone is different.

I buy/trade for any pin I want, card or not if it's a pin I really want. However, when I sell pins, I try to stick with ones that are on card as much as possible because for me they do better. But, I am not a full time seller. I sell to get rid of duplicates I wasn't able to trade, or to narrow down when I no longer want certain characters. Eventually I will have to go with pins not on cards because my kids always trade for duplicates because they don't remember what they have :)

Thank you for the advice!! I am also a doll collector and so used to having to keep the dolls in their boxes and so pristine to keep their value.

I may be able to make two types of boards to show off the pins, one where I keep some of the pins on the cards (one where they hang on the card) and one where they are off (more like a picture frame). I'm just afraid it will take up so much space to keep them on the card. Plus you never know when you'll have to trade and pin to finish a collection and then I would hate to have some on cards and some off.

I will probably take them off carefully and save the card, somehow keeping track of which pin came from which card. I don't think I'll ever sell them, one day my daughter will get them, but I guess you never can tell the future.
