Pin Trading?

Is this another way Disney came up with to make money? I saw some kids trading with CMs last week at WDW, and it looked pretty cool. But then I was researching, and people talk about Pin Nazi's...and I don't want to fall into that crowd!
Anyone experienced?
And when they release new pins...any experiences? Where do they do it? and what is the procedure?
Thanks!

Here is my take on th pin trading. You could go one of two ways: die-hard "Pin nazi" collect the biggest and best pins; or just pick one/two groups, characters, theme and collect at will.

I am not a pin collector. It never really appealed to me or DH. In fact, the only pins we do own are a few NY Yankees pins I found with Mickey on it for DH. I am sure if there were something to come along that would spark our interest, it would be fun for us. With that being said, there are a set of pins coming out next month (I think) that showcase the Adventure's Club in WDW. When DH showed me the designs I went crazy! I WILL be buying at least one set. We love the AC!
I don't think we will be trading them, but will just buy them to own and possibly hang in a shadow-box.

Since I am not experienced, I can't aswer your questions about new pin releases, sorry.

The Pin Nazis are pretty easy to spot, and to avoid. They're usually the ones sitting at pin trading events with bulging pin cases open, closely scrutinizing the pins of everyone approaching them and rarely ever smiling. If I don't see someone having fun while trading, I stay away from them. I do most of my trading with CMs anyway.

As for new pins, they're released in a variety of different ways at the parks. They're usually released in the stores that have the Pin Trading logo on their signs, and are put in a "New Releases" section. The best way to keep track of new releases is to visit the Official Disney Pin Trading site at http://www.odpt.com and checking the "New Pins" and "Upcoming Pins" sections. It will tell you the release date, location, cost and, if applicable, the edition size of each pin. A handful of new pins are also released on disneyshopping.com every Monday (it also offers free shipping of pins on Mondays, too).

If you approach pin trading with the idea of using it to collect little pieces of Disney memories, meeting new people and, most importantly, having FUN, then you shouldn't have any problems with avoiding the Nazis.

Okay, you have to tell me where you saw these!!! Pretty please?

I just started pin collecting on our last trip. I have one lanyard and 8 pins. I am doing it to mainly collect "place" pins, like WDW, DL, DCL, and a few favorite characters. So far I have a WDW, a 2007 WDW, a Mickey and Minnie Cuties, a Cinderella, a Lilo and Stitch, a Hidden Mickey pin with Mickey and Minnie at a soda shop, a Disney Cruise Line, and a Tinkerbell.

I got a tip on the Pin board... buy a "lot" of pins from eBay to trade with and you can get them for about $2 a piece! I'll be doing that before our DL trip.

We've taken up the pin trading on a very small scale. I buy about 10 pins off of ebay for each trip, then we can trade the ones we don't like. It's fun for me, fun for the kids, and we get a little extra magic. But we don't have enough money to be obsessive about it!

Pin trading is fun. I never thought I would get into it but I do enjoy it. Sometimes I buy pins from ebay because it's cheaper than spending $10-12/EA in the parks. It's fun to trade with the CM's at DL but as mentioned in the above posts, I do see the same group of "pin vulchers" waiting to swoop in on Cast exclusives. No matter what day I go to DL I always see them. It's okay though, I often times am lucky and am able to find cool pins to trade with CM's in other locations of the park or in DCA.

I don't see a series of Adventurers Club pins scheduled for release anytime soon, but there is a jumbo "Kungaloosh!" pin scheduled for March 20:

I love PINS!!! PINS PINS PINS! DIE HARD PIN COLLECTOR HERE! hehehe!

I've got too many to count and ive got them on my vest at one of my jobs. I've got people from work asking me to bring them back pins when I go on my next visit to DL. It great cause when kids see them, their faces light right up. I think I seeked out every single pin place in DL when I went.

Another pin trader here. Let me warn you, it is ADDICTIVE.

I let my son start a few years ago. I got him a few cheap pins off ebay (just make sure they are not Sedesma, those are sometimes hard to trade). He's not quite to pin Nazi status, but that's only because I won't let him. He'd love to sit out there with the other Nazi's and talk pins all day long.

We've got well over 300 pins now. He wears a minimum of 2 lanyards in the parks, sometimes 3. He trades for what he likes, but he's got a good eye. He usually picks out limited editions.

Me, I love Tink and have 2 lanyards absolutely full, with more pins stored at home.

I never buy pins on release day. As a matter of fact, I rarely pay full price for pins. I buy at the outlets or ebay, then trade in the parks for what we like. But we've seen folks lined up for hours just to get the pins. They are usually at the Little Green Men shop in Tomorrowland and the line stretches from there, around the planter under the Orbitron (or whatever it's called) back around to the stage area. They only let a few people in at a time. And even if you don't want a new pin, you can't get in the shop until later in the day, once they've cleared the line.

I have been into pin collecting for longer than I care to admit, it is fun, and it can be addictive. My advice is to collect what you like, don’t get caught up in the whole it’s a Limited Edition of 750 so it must be something worth collecting so I should get it.

Trading off Cast Member lanyards is a pretty safe thing to do, be patient, be polite and you will have a great time.

When it comes to trading with other guests in the park, be careful you will find a shark or two in with the Dolphins.

There are some other internet sites out there that are very helpful when it comes to pin trading and collecting.

One that is good for general information and future release info is Dizpins

Another one that is very helpful in keeping track of your collections and wants is Pinpics

YES!

Any Disney pin can be traded. It can be any of Disney parks, the Disney Store, and even the Broadway shows.

Oh yes you can trade all Disney pins at all parks. My daughter got one from eurodisney last week and thought it was so cool. She also has many from Florida even though she has never been!

Holy cow!!! $25?

I don't think I'll be buying jumbo pins, just ones that can fit on my lanyard.

Thanks anyways, Brian! :thumbsup2

Dude, but think how great that would look in a brown stain shadow box hanging over the fireplace! :cool1:

OK...I've hit a little bump in the road! A minor snag...I've been cruising ebay to build up some good pins for us to trade next weekend when we go...but I keep getting pins that I LIKE! How do I get pin trading pins I can TRADE!!!
:faint:

Isnt there a special name for pin trading? Someone asked me the other day and I couldt remember.

I have started buying the cheapest pins I can find on eBay. Just sort buy "ending first" and look for the ones that are $1.99 or so. I know what you mean though...I have a few that I like too!
