Hello! I just wanted to add if there are any pin trading starter sets available for purchase on the ships? We want to do pin trading for the first time with my son who will be 5 :) thanks!

Yes. There are some themed sets that come with lanyards and some more random bags that come without lanyards. Prices are same as you would see at Disney store on land.

I am interested in knowing more about people's views on getting into pin trading and such.

I have a number of pins that I have purchased myself in various parks. These are great keepsakes for me overall, although I do have a few that were purchased in sealed packages so as to not know what they were until after they were opened. The latter ones are ones I would be happy to trade to anyone that wanted that particular pin and I also have a couple of duplicates that I would feel the same about.

How do most folks see the process of pin trading? Are you genuinely interested in trading for those pins that are unique and will be special to you? Trading for ones that are no longer available but might be of a topic you like? Is it nothing more than a social activity?

For me, I want pins that I -want-, and I would be happy to trade for those that I find appealing. I have absolutely no idea how to know whether pins I would be interested in trading are of any value to anyone else, though.

When my son was 5 he loved pin trading!! Yes, there are starter lanyards and that is how he started. He would spend so much time thinking about what one he wanted and what one he wanted to trade. Have fun! It brings back fun memories thinking about that. He is 18 now :)

I like to trade with kids who have them displayed. I usually have 1-2 on my lanyard that are important to me, and I let them know that I can't trade those ones, but they are free to trade any of theirs for any of my others. I don't really care what I get in return since the trade is more about the kids and I didn't want to keep the ones I had anyway (hence why they are traders!). Collecting pins isn't about money value, there might be a few, but they aren't investment... like beenie babies. If you like them, it has more value than worth. This coming from someone who has way too many pins.

Pin trading can be very fun and exciting but do be on the lookout for fake/scrapper pins. I recently got into collecting pins and it’s a circus out there. eBay is flooded with fake pins.

What ISN'T eBay flooded with fakes of? :)

It's always good advice to know what you're buying and/or buy from a reputable seller, especially in the used market.

I bought a starter kit from Disney when I was there last week. I believe it was a Moana lanyard with four pins. I bought it because I liked the lanyard and wanted to trade the pins. I found it to be cheaper to buy the lanyard and pins together for $30 versus individually since the lanyard is typically $13 by itself.

I collect and trade pins. I have certain characters and themes which I collect. I keep these at home in a special pin bag. When I visit the parks and next year when I go on my first Disney cruise, I will have a lanyard of trading pins.

I only buy Disney pins either in the parks, or at Disney store. I check any pins I receive as trades on pinpics. com I only keep genuine pins, all other pins are for trading. The way I see it, I got the fake / scrapper pin in the park, so it goes back to the park. The one exception is when I trade with kids. I always make sure to only trade genuine / not scrapper pins with kids.

We used to trade pins, but ever since one of my kids traded a real pin with a CM (we only trade with CMs) and got a fake, we pretty much stopped. It was in the parks, and I don't necessarily blame the CM, but they don't often say no to guests, especially kids, so they wind up with fakes that people buy in lots off of ebay. We were new to pin trading at the time, so I didn't know how to look for fakes, but figured it should be fine trading with just CMs. We did have one CM check the pin we were trading. At the time I didn't know what she was doing until I came home, YouTubed some vids on pin trading and figured out the fakes problem with Disney pins.
