Picture of Tornado in Iowa (Update: Picture is Real)

Sorry this looks really fake to me. To be on the safe side I have sent it to Snopes online to have them verify if it is doctored. I do not think the OP meant to post something that may or may not be real, I just like to have the right information. It is tragic about the tornado season this year. I am in Oklahoma and spend a lot of time dealing with yucky scary weather!

Here it is posted on yahoo news with who took the photo. http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/slideshow/photo//080613/480/e06645fc489a4e70987e27c3d9f6e4cc/ However, it was not by the tornado with the Boy Scouts. So, I apologize for that one. It was in a different part of Iowa.

Madi100. I am from Iowa too, Des Moines in fact. This flooding and tornadoes are SCARY I do have to admit. Luckily my home won't be affected(as long as the levees hold) but my DH drove through Cedar Rapids/Waterloo Wednesday and today and it is NOT a good situation, my heart goes out to your siblings who are from there. STAY SAFE!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not trying to post a picture that is not true. My brother sent it to me. It was sent from an underwriter in Omaha to him. If it's fake, I'll take it down. Along with that picture I was sent pictures of the Boy Scout camp that was destroyed. I did search at snopes and did not find that picture listed. I guess when there's so much tradegy I don't think people are senidng "bad" pictures. The reality is bad enough. It doesn't need to be faked.

I doesn't need to be but often is faked. There were lots of fake 911 photos. Tragedy brings out the whackos. Anyway, I'm not saying the photo is fake, but it just looks questionable. It may indeed be real, but in this digital age it is very hard to tell.

They are still very bad. We lived by Des Moines for the floods of '93 and how horrible. This is much worse.

I was here in '93 too but I was only 5 so I really don't remember it but from what I hear it is worse than '93. This is so scary, I took a whole bunch of pictures of the waters today and actaully got some really cool ones.

OMG that is so scary looking. I am glad you and your family are safe.

I had seen that photo posted on a weather blog that I frequent. I wondered where it cam it from. Thanks for the link. I agree, it's the most amazing weather picture that I've ever seen.

My heart goes out to all going thru this horrible weather cycle. :grouphug:

I guess the picture looks suspect to me because there is absolutely no debris floating around it, and no dust. I know so little about tornadoes and what they look like, though, I can really make no judgment about this one.

This weather and these tragedies have been a lot to take, and my heart goes out to each and every person experiencing the fear and uncertainty when one of these tornadoes comes close, as well as those who have suffered losses.

Madi, I never said you posted, intentionally a fake photo. Living in this area of the world I see tornados often, live and on tv, and photos. This one just does not look right to me. You, as I stated did not post it thinking it was fake. I have sent it to Snopes so that they can identify it for us. It could be part real or all real or any combo. Really it doesnt matter as I stated, it was a tragic event and has been a deadly season. Sorry if you took my statement personally, I tried hard to state that I did not think you meant to post it, just what my feelings are about it. Thanks
Aimee

I have to agree, just lots of odd things in the photo. The flag and trees and what looks like part of the funnel cloud missing.

Yeah, I think its photoshopped as well. If the person were that close, and the tornado was that close, there'd be a lot more distruction, the flag wouldn't even be there, and those power lines an polls would be sucking in due to the sheer force of something that big. I don't like to be a pessimist, and I'm sure it was devastating to be there. My heart goes out to any person in a tragic situation, but I hate it when people feel the need to make things worse for people with doctors photos.

Here's a link from the NYTimes where it's mentioned:

and here's a story about the photo:

Looks to be real. I'll admit when I first saw it posted I wondered if it had been photoshopped. I googled the photgraphers name, and there are others debating this too. The consensus seems to be that it is real and that it's the formation of a tornado (forgive me, I think they called it some kind of wall) which would explain some of the questions you all posed.

Anyway if you google the name Lori Mehmen you can see some of the debate and decide for yourself. From what I gather, it appears real!

My dh and two boys are away at a Beaveree Camp this weekend. My dh is a scout and beaver leader (I don't know if they have beavers in the US scout groups - they are the little guys) and my youngest is a beaver and the eldest is now a scout.
They had a special moment of silence and prayer for the scouts and families that were affected in anyway by that horrible storm. They really all feel so connected to their "american scout brothers" and have been talking about it all quite a bit this weekend. Tonight they began campfire ceremonies with a special scout song - would not tell me which - apparently it's close to their scout hearts.
It's touching that something that seems so far away has been felt so close to home by these kids.

Yikes is about all I can say. That looks awful, but the way this Spring season has been its not uncommon.

Holy S, errr bad word.

Man that is too close for comfort.

Prayers to those who have been effected.

WOW!!! That is scarry :scared1: :scared1: I am praying for you all in Iowa. I know how scarry this is, Last summer A F2 Tornado hit the Northwest side of my hometown of Columbus ohio in the suburb of New Albany. We just had minor damage no one died or got hurt

Wow, all I can say is that is truly amazing. I too looked it up on Snopes and have seen no reason to doubt it's authenticity.

We had a tornado come through our city in 2005. It came in around 2 a.m., absolutely devastated parts of our city and claimed many lives. I guess that is the chance you take living in the Mid-West, but still frightening none the less.

Fantastic photo.

It made my heart jump just looking at the picture. My prayers go out to the Boy Scouts/Adult Leaders that experienced this horrible tragedy. So sad and scary. :(

If the pic is real, and the location is also correct...this is not the tornado that hit the Boy Scout camp. Orchard, Ia is nearly 300 miles away from the location of the camp tragedy.

I'm not sure on this picture, either...it's been popping up all over the net (and being picked up by news sources) with different locations & photographer's names attributed to it. In this day & age, who knows?

"I saw it on the 'net, it must be true..."

I clarified that it was not from the Boy Scout camp in another post. My brother sent them to me with other pictures from that tornado, and I mistakenly took it to be of that tornado.
