We have heard about the picnic at AK. Where do you go to set this up? Do you need a reservation?

According to All Ears...

As of April 7, 2009, Disney's Animal Kingdom began offering a new meal program called Picnic in the Park. As part of this program, you are able to purchase a meal for the family packaged in an "Every Tree Has Character" reusable bag, which can then be taken to one of a number of picnic spots throughout the park. Plates and utensils are provided. Meals include a choice of entrees, side dishes, desserts, and water. There are two tiers available:

Tier 1 features a chicken wrap, ham grinder, tuna pita, turkey focaccia sandwich, or portobello mushroom and vegetable wrap (vegetarian option), with pricing starting at $17.99 plus tax for a meal for two.

Tier 2 offers a choice of rotisserie chicken or ham, with pricing starting at $20.99 plus tax for a meal for two.

NOTE: No modifications or substitutions are allowed.

Guests with food allergies should alert the Cast Member when placing their order, who will then contact a chef. Guests will be able to order their picnic at Guest Relations until 2:30 p.m. daily, as well as at the Picnic in the Park podium located outside Island Mercantile.

Tier 1 picnics will only be available for pick-up from DinoBites, located near Restaurantosaurus. Tier 2 picnics will offer rotisserie chicken and will continue to be picked up from the Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery, near Tusker House Restaurant. Guests can also put together a "grab 'n go" bag at Beastly Bazaar, with their choice of sandwiches, individual bags of potato chips, desserts and water.

I hope that helps you! They have prices listed on the website. If you're on the DDP this meal counts as a Counter Service Credit for each person it feeds. So if you get the Picnic For Two, it costs 2 CS credits. While you don't need "reservations" per say, you do need to order your meal at one of the kiosks listed above and then pick it up a couple of hours later.

Thank you SO much!! Great info--very detailed! Can't wait for our boys' first visit next month!!

One more question--We are on DDP, does this cover both Tiers???

Yes, but they stopped offering ham earlier this month. Tier 2 is chicken only.

If you're getting Tier 1, I wouldn't use the DDP, it's much cheaper per person than any other QS meal you'll find ($19 and change, after tax, for 2 people, vs. $13-16 per person at most QS places if you get the entree, drink, dessert).

We are interested in this for our party of 6 in Feb.

Anyone here care to share a review?

We did the grab and go option on our last day. It was a great way to finish using up our counter service credits and nice to have a snack on the plane ride home.

As was noted, Tier 2 is now chicken only, no ham. You must order at least 2 hours before you plan to pick up the food. You can order on the dining plan from either tier but you cannot mix tiers on the same order - you would have to make two separate orders if some of your group wants chicken and the others want sandwiches. The side dishes have been assigned to particular tiers - there are now some you cannot get with Tier 1 and some that you cannot get with Tier 2. Tier 1 orders will be picked up in Dinoland, Tier 2 orders at Kusafiri Bakery in Africa. There's no separate line for picnic pickup - you'll wait in line with everyone else who is making a regular order from Kusafiri.

The only beverage included with the picnic is one very small bottle of Dasani water per person.

Anyone have the tandoori tofu side dish? That woudl be my meal...the meat and other sides would be for the family. Thoughts?

The tandoori tofu was AMAZING. Best part of the meal (which was overall pretty good). There's no rice or anything, though, so eating a whole side of it might be a bit much. All the sides but 1 are vegetarian, maybe you could have some of those too, if your family is set on chicken rather than sandwiches.

There's a review in my signature.

Just want to note that while the minimum time allowed between ordering and pickup *can be* up to 2 hours, so you shouldn't count on less, it's not always. We ordered at 10:55 and were offered a pickup time of any time after 12:15.

Perfect!!! Thanks! I :love: tofu and zuchini and tandoori so I was hoping it was fab!

I will probably have some of the mashed taters, too, but the crew I will be with are ALL in love with that stuff, so the tofu will be mine alone!!! I will have to fight for any of the other stuff ;)
