As my title suggests my family is a bit well a lot more than a bit on the picky side. Strange sauces, weird spices, seafood, all are to be avoided. Heck, I dont even want it on the table next to me
..
So the adventure becomes finding food that we like in WDW without eating counter service chicken strips all week . Which reading some of the menus on allears doesnt sound like a half bad idea .
The cast:
DM My mom! Thankful every day that my mom is also my very best friend and a fellow Disney/Florida/travel lover. Picky in her own right but will eat some fish dishes where I will not.
DS My only child and the joy of my life. 14 years old but most days eats like a bird. This kid even turns down the ice cream cart
Most of his meals were ordered off the kids menu because most of the time he wont even finish those portions.
Me Disney lover and extremely picky eater.
On with the reviews .
Kona Café
We ended up in WDW earlier than planned as an ice storm hit our area and our flight schedule was moved up. So instead of quick counter service we had time for a meal. Part of the reason for the trip was to view the holiday decorations so we decided to give the Poly a trip this first evening.
We did not have an ADR as this meal was entirely unplanned. I walked up and asked for seating for our party of 3 and was told 45-60 minute wait. Normally, I would have walked away but this evening we had plenty of time so we waited. About 25 minutes later our buzzer sounded and it was time for dinner!
DM - Coconut Almond Chicken - sauteed chicken breast served with Asian greens tossed with honey-lime dressing, golden pineapple, strawberries, and toasted almonds $16.49. This was definitely the best meal choice of the night. Although I did ask mom why she ordered chicken as she eats enough chicken at home that she could almost sprout feathers..... The chicken was extremely moist and more like a crusted chicken than anything odd All in all a very safe choice for most picky eaters.
Me - Slow Roasted Prime Rib - mashed potatoes and stir-fried broccoli florets $21.99. The mashed potatoes were to die for as even with the skin on (not something Id normally try) and made up for the very stringy prime rib. Has anyone ever had stringy prime rib??? Im not sure it if was because I asked for it well done for what??? Probably the worst red meat dish I had all week . Extremely disappointing
DS Off the kids menu garden salad (which I ate he wont touch lettuce leaves), cheeseburger and fries. He said it was a good cheeseburger but ate very little. This would be a recurring theme most of the week
Although, they had led us past the desert menu when we arrived, we ended up with no room for desert as the meal included an awesome breadbasket. Warm roles with a slightly sweat butter that was very good. I had hoped that they would have the pineapple bread that has disappeared from the OHana menu, but alas this was not to be. However, this was a nice starter!
All in all, if you have picky eaters in your crew then Kona is actually a safe choice. Mom talked about the chicken all week and Im hoping it was just an off night for the prime rib.
