Physical Hard Drive Failure

The worse words to ever cross my Momma heart. A 2.5 years ago I backed all of my stuff up on an add'l internal HD.... and DVD roms. Now the DVD roms are gone, and that add'l internal HD is having 'physical hard drive failure'. My heart hurts. My daughters first 2.5 years of life are on that HD.. Our visit trips to see her in Guatemala, our pick up trip in Guatemala, adoption paperwork, and photos of our lives together....

All of this to ask...

Has anyone used carbonite? Do you know if I'll be able to back up my new external HD? (I am going to get another one to be safe..)

Does anyone have recommendations for companies that handle restoring HD's? I saw staples does it for $1499.99 (Total devastation....)

hubby said to check out drivesavers.com he is a computer guy and has used them before. they do work but can cost up to $2500 to get any data off the drives.. its up to you if you think the data is worth it...

Unfortunately with hard drives, its not an "if" as much as a "when" they will fail. Hope you are able to retrieve your data.

I use idrive. I think it is cheaper than carbonite. Also if you want to try them out you can get 5 gb storage for free.

Can be salvaged. Like previous posters have said, you can get it done, but it will cost. I had a HD that failed and my coworker who does this job needed about 20 hours of labor salvage it. The reason it is so expensive is that it can take forever.


Also, this will make you learn your lesson... back up back up back up.

Go to GRC.com and order SpinRite. It is the program that is most likely to get your data back. Now, keep in mind tjat what is reported as physical failure isn't necessarily. If the disv will no onger track no software will fix it anf you will need forensic help.

Lastly, you will have to take the drive out of the USB enclosure and connect it to the motherboard for SpinRite to work.
