Photos and magnetic albums

I was digging through a drawer of older pictures. I can't even get caught up on current ones, but thought of a layout I would like to do using some of my dad's navy pictures. I have several envelopes with pictures and several magnetic albums full of pics in this drawer. The strange thing is that the loose pictures look worse than the ones in the albums. Some of the loose ones were fading out real bad-to the point that I couldn't really tell what some of them were. Something else weird is that some of the photos seem like they have gotten a lot darker-again to the point that it is hard to tell what they are. The photos that are in the magnetic albums actually look pretty good. The pages of the album have yellowed in some of them, but the pictures seem to be holding up better than the loose ones. This makes no sense to me. I was going to go ahead and pull the ones out of the albums, but now I'm not sure I want to do that as I'm not ready to scrapbook them. Any thoughts???

Could it be that the ones in the magnetic albums haven't been in there as long as the loose ones have been in the box? Perhaps if they've only been in the magnetic album for 10-20 years they haven't shown the yellowing yet. Just an idea.
Photos from my first Disneyland trip are yellowed from being in a magnetic album. They were in it for about 30 years.
As far as the box goes- If it's a shoe box it wouldn't have protected them from the humidity or anything. And if they were crammed in tight enough the air wouldn't have been able to circulate.
I don't know. I'm just throwing out ideas. I guess I'd try to get everything out of the "bad" stuff and at least into photo safe boxes or albums with sleeves.
