Can someone tell me if there is a particular name for this type of photography style?

I like the really bright colors and the sharpness of the subject combined with the blurriness of the background.
Is this hard to acheive? I have a Canon Rebel, but it's new, so I'm not really familiar with all the features.

Thanks!

Most of those are just typical portraits. You should be able to achieve them to some degree with the rebel. Just set a low Fstop and use a long focal length. With the kit lens this is unfortunately 55mm @F5.6. However, you can but lenses that are "made" for portraits. Something like the Sigma 50mm F1.4 would really blur a background. Keep in mind though that you will be taking the picture from farther away then you might be used to.

Or if you don't want to pay the $400+ for the 50mm f/1.4 you can insteat get the 50mm f/1.8 for around $80. Its not made as solidily as the f/1.4, but for its price it is VERY sharp and still gives a wide aperture to acheive the blury backround.

it's easy if you have low (large) aperture lens, otherwise a similar effect can be done with Photoshop

I'm thinking the name you may be looking for is bokeh

or maybe the phrase a shallow depth of field

PP stated how to do it:thumbsup2

Thanks everyone for the help! I think I understand the low f stop for the blurry background effect, but how about the color? Is there a technique to use to get the colors so vivid and bright?

Thanks again!

photoshop->saturation->drag slider to right ;)

You can usually do this to some extent in camera as well if you choose to. How to do it exactly will be explained in the manual.

Lightroom is a very good program for color enhancement. You can saturate or desatuate some colors while leaving the others intact. I think that helps with the "pop" that you are looking for.

I'll second the suggestion for Lightroom. For those on a budget Photoshop elements is around $100 for the software and a very good guide book.

hope you don't mind me joining in- there are some great photoshop actions that you can use to enhance colors. Check out Totally Rad Actions

If you follow the deals sites at all, you may be able to get LR pretty cheap. I got it for $130 from Amazon a while back as part of their gold box special.

I'm not 100% sure about the Rebel, but Canon's P&S's have color settings called "Vivid" and "Positive Film"; both of which make colors "pop" more.

On my S3, IMO, "Vivid" is sometimes a little *too* saturated, but I take 95% of my pics with "Positive Film".
