Interesting article on the NASA site on the equipment they use to photograph launches. Many of those cameras still use film and a lot of it (400 frames per second will do that). High speed video just doesn't produce the clarity needed (the primary purpose of these cameras is to spot problems). The number of cameras used during shuttle launches significantly increased after the loss of Columbia.
Not a weapon, this is a camera and it even has a seat. NASA has 10 of these stationed around Kennedy Space Center during launches.
