(Please forgive me if this has been asked a million times but I did a search and did not find anything!)

What is a good program for storing photos on your home computer? I would like something easy ( :) ) where photos would be stored by month and year. I am not too well versed in the proper terminology so please forgive me! (..that's why I need it to be easy..) I just want to be able to download my photos and have them stored so I can access them easily.

Any suggestions???

TIA!

Jill

You can do that in Windows Explorer. You don't need any other program. Just set up the folders and subfolders the way you want them. That's how I have about 15,000 pics stored, some in separate partitions.

I do it a bit differently though, I make my folders by event and then subfolders below that for year and month and then "sub-sub folders" by the month (if that is necessary). Just easier for me to remember the event rather than to try to remember what month or year we may have done something or gone somewhere.

I don't use a program for storing photos on my home PC. I too just use Windows Exporer. I use the My Pictures folder, then break down my photo albums into years and months. Each year has a seperate folder and each year folder has a seperate folder for each month (I do the same with RAW files in a seperate folder).

I don't rename any of my image files (unless they've been edited). This keeps the files in the order I took them.

I use explorer as well. I create a folder for the year, then sub folders for each month then subfolders in each month for the events. Works for me.

Reference my earlier post, as I got older (I'm 63) I found it was a lot easier to remember the "where" rather than the "when". That's why I do my primary folder by the event rather than the year or month.

Example, the other day one of my girls wanted a picture from when we all went skiing in Park City, UT. None of us could remember the year that we went although we could narrow it down to about a 3 year time frame in the early 90"s. Since I had all of the pics from Salt Lake City ( I had about 3 years worth of pics in that folder) in one folder, it was simple to pull up that folder and then go down to the Park City ones. If I had had them first segregated by year, it would have taken longer to find.

I just finished scanning 23,000 photos and copying 4000 slides going back as far as the early 60's and I have organized them this way also.

Just the way I do it, and your mileage my vary. There really in no right or wrong way, just what works for you.
