Photo Recovery from SD card

I know this has probably been asked and answered many times here but I'll ask anyway. I have an 8GB SD card which has a lot of photos on it. Instead of doing the right thing & moving them to my external hard drive after each shoot, I just kept adding more photos. Last Sunday night I looked at my photos, looked good. Monday night went to look at them again and the last 50-60 photos in the 2nd folder are missing.

I tried looking it on my laptop, a pc & my camera. Had an IT friend use PC Tools to try & recover them, only got bits & pieces of many & one full photo. Also, he had trouble reading the card on one of his computers but got it to work on another. Camera store will charge $30.00 for every 4GB. Some of the photos were good but not $60.00 worth.

Checking out ZAR and it seems to be free to recover photos (although you have to pay for other uses). Has anyone here used ZAR & is it indeed free for photo only recovery? Also, I not computer savvy at all, is it fairly easy? And is it legit, ZAR won't give my computer a virus, will it?

Thanks for any help. Oh, and I did finally transfer all of the photos that were still there & I'll toss this card once I get whatever else I can off of it.

I've used ZAR twice, once just a month ago. It was free for photo recovery. It seemed more time consuming this time than the last but it could have been just me missing something though it was easy. I ended up having to click a box next to each file to select them for recovery. There were 600+ files. There were only a few photos that weren't recovered completely. Maybe 2 were completely blank and another 6 or so are only half the photo in the thumbnail but when opened to full size they load. Strange.

1 st. Does your SD card maker have a recovery program to download ? (Some do)
You might also try a Recuva deep scan:

Its possible either Recuva or ZAR may work better in your situation.
