Can anyone tell me the best way to check email on the ship? Last time I would buy data and sign in maybe once or twice a day just to check in at home by email, less than 5 minutes at most, and my data was used pretty quickly and had to continue buying more. No fb or anything. I see other people check in, post on fb. Are they just paying for the data all the time or am I doing something wrong?

Did you make sure to turn off auto-updates and anything that might be using data in the background? That's the most common reason for data to be used up quickly.

Uploading emails takes quite a bit too I think. I may be wrong but sending messages through Facebook may use less data than email.

I thought I turned off auto-updates; at least I attempted too. I wasn't aware fb may use less data. Thanks!

Unless you are emailing pictures sending emails use up almost no data like less then 80KB range. Receiving could be different if people are sending you emails with pics and attachments

Most emails are tiny in terms of data, 40 emails is equal to 1MB, as long as they don't have attachments - pictures, documents etc. The more attachments, the more data. Facebook uses far more data.

Unless it has changed, Disney gave us a small amount of wifi for 'free'. It was 50MB maybe? And so we were able to check emails (but have to not have them be massive pictures, etc).

Yes, most cruises have a 50MB free offer, as long as you sign up by midnight the first day (embarkation day).

How does it work once you hit the 50 MB? Does the service automatically turn off, or do they just auto bill you for any overage?

Whatever you're doing will stop and you'll get a message asking you how you want to proceed - do you want to purchase one of the available packages, or quit?

Then your session will continue once you made the purchase.

Well when I connect, all the emails download. Which might be he problem. If only once a day I imagine downloading all those junk emails take a lot of data. I wish there was a way to filter email downloads.

Love airplane mode..... it means email and apps aren't continually wasting data to check for new content.

There is, but it depends on your client and device. What are you using? If you have something like gmail you could even set up a filter to have everything with a pic or attachment skip your inbox and go into a different folder. That would be double protection. But if you have an iphone there's an option in the mail settings to have remote images stay unloaded unless you click on them.

I was able to check my email daily and my husband checked his email every other day and not use up the free 50 MB on a 7 day cruise last week. I was very very quick, just looking for important emails. It was my goal to not pay for internet for the trip.

All updates and icloud were turned off. No facebook or anything other than email.
