Coming from Australia I am thinking of getting a local SIM card for our phones rather than relying on park WiFi. Can anyone (perhaps overseas visitors with experience) give me an idea of what the best plan of attack would be. There is a place here in Australia where I can mail order AT&T SIM cards before we leave. Do people think this is a good idea?

As a fellow Ozzie, I have a vodaphone plan for traveling. It’s only $5 extra a day for unlimited data and you don’t even have to contact them to add your travel dates, it’s automatic as soon as you get off the plane. I’ve tried using international SIM cards and I feel it’s too much mucking around.

I'm interested in this too. I've always bought pre-paid SIM cards for USA but the company I used to use doesn't exist anymore. Unfortunately I'm with Telstra and their roaming add-ons are too expensive (and not enough data, as I want to use Google maps). I'll post back if I find anything good. I also need 45 days which makes it difficult.

Not Australian, but German. I always get a US SIM card from Amazon. I can get 2 weeks, 30 days and 60 days normally, not sure if this is offered for Australia as well. 5 GB data, unlimited calls and texts. I have a dual SIM phone, this is by far the easiest solution for me.
