PHM 2015-In Pursuit of Cupcakes While Running in Glass Slippers

Do any of you cupcakes use a GPS watch that tells you your distance/pace/etc? I am kind of obsessed with being able to see my pace...it keeps me on track...like when you set a pace on the treadmill. It's hard to use my phone just because it obviously goes off so I am thinking of investing in one. Any recommendations?

This is awesome! What does everyone do when weather prevents you from run/walking outside? No treadmill or elliptical here. (And sadly no space in this house for one.) I am thinking my Leslie Sansome 3-mile walk video might be a good substitute? Fortunately the rain held off or moved on long enough for me to get my workout in today. Did 2 miles run/walk in 30 1/2 minutes. Not too shabby. Splits were 16 mm os that's pretty decent for a girl who formerly claimed to not be able to run! :cool1: Tomorrow I start week 2 of C25K. I'll have to find an extra running day this week since I didn't get one in Fri or Sat as planned last week! A huge thanks to all the cupcakes! You ladies motivate me!

I learned to run in the rain...unfortunately that is the way to keep up if you don't have a treadmill. Or find a local gym with an indoor track. Invest in a nice rain shell and water resistant hat if you don't want to be drenched. In the summer, it's actually better.

I use Nike+ on my iPhone and it works well. I know some people who use Strava also.

Thank you all for the advice and support! You ladies are the best! :flower3:

My chest has been hurting only when I press down on it and awkward movement - it's def. muscle because when I put a heating pad on the pain went away a little and I was no longer tense! I wish there was a whole body heating pad I could slip on haha :lmao:

Anyways! I biked today (sit down with back support bike - I'm not sure what it's called haha) I did 30 minutes and I did tricep cable pushdowns. That's all I had in me....got home really late last night from work and was exhausted this morning!

C25K Week 4, Workout #2 TOMORROW! I'll be on the treadmill. Heavy rain/wind will be in the forecast!

As promised, here is a printable workout form for this week. This weekend I'll try to work on an editable version where you can type on it and change the dates.

Workout Plan April 28 - May 4

I love this so much! So pretty! I would totally print these out if you make one for each week! I will print one out for this week tho! THANK YOU! You rock! :cheer2:

WOOT WOOT!!!! Love it and already printed it. I think I need to hook up the color printer though, it's just not the same in black and white.

Treadmill, Walk away the pounds, or switch to cross training like 30 day shred. 16mm is great!!!

I have the Garmin forerunner 10 like the one above. I love it but I hate the battery life. OK if it is fully charged for a 1/2 but if I ever decide to go to a full marathon distance I will need a new one, cause I'm slow! LOL What I like most about the watch is I can set intervals.

I compared the watch to my phone GPS on a measured course and my watch was much more accurate. My phone did an ok job but I wanted more accuracy with my pacing since I knew I'd be close to the cut off for the 1/2.

I have a Garmin 305 I affectionately call my garage door opener for my road runs and I have the Fr70 for my gym workouts. I am just like you. I love Garmin. Excellent customer service. garmin connect will upload your stats and you can see how your training and improvement goes from week to week! I find the accuracy to be impeccable on Garmins. I run on trails with mile markers and the Gatmin unless its cloudy or the weather is sketchy it will always be spot on.

Well no running today...or lunch walk! On day 3 of dust storm...

I did get to walk last night when we got a short break from wind!

Ugh Tammie!! Great pic though. I hope the weather settles down for everyone this week. It's been nuts!!

Who stepped on Mother Natures Cupcake?
Cause she is PO'ed!!!

I tried the Tom Tom one but felt it was off.

I use mapmyrun on my iPhone.

My husband is currently trying out a Basis watch (the new one that just came out) & is enthralled with it as it gives a pretty accurate calorie burn as it checks your heart rate as well as other stuff with sleep & movement.

I hate rain! I have super curly hair so it grows by leaps and bounds in the rain, but I might just have to suck it up!

Thanks! I was proud of my split and how much running I did today! I love Walk Away the Pounds actually...I get a great calorie burn from it. And I have Zumba DVD's which I love. At this point I can't see doing a half, or a full, the 10K is a big undertaking for me, but my husband is running the full WDW Marathon weekend and I am looking into getting him one too so the battery life feedback is great!

I do use Map My Run on my phone right now. My problem is that I like to see my pace and find it's ok when I'm pushing the stroller to check it, but impossible when I have the phone in my armband. But I'm not the most coordinated! :rotfl: I'll look into the Basis watch as well. I am afraid I'll have too many gadgets when all is said and done since I have a heart rate monitor watch already! This may become an obsession!

I had to change the armband I had in order to better see my phone while running and twisting my hand. The basis could replace the heart rate monitor watch with all the stuff it does along with communicating it back to your phone.

I used to run with an arm band and honestly I hated it. Now I keep my stuff in my sparkle skirt and I have a Moto Active on my wrist. Not my favorite device but it works ok and the GPS is accurate

Yes - running in the rain is not the best but you are training to run in Florida where the weather is crazy and could rain or be freezing. I am try to embrace it - I staffed a marathon here about three weeks ago and it rained the entire time, hard.

As far as the phone, I just saw a runners world article with handy storage for runners And there was a phone case by yurbuds with a strap, so you could see the screen without it slipping out of your hand. I was thinking it would be great for the race for taking photos. I fumbled a lot with the camera during the last PHM.

I have a treadmill for those days, but when ours broke last year (we kill treadmills at our house, 3 in 12 years) I ran outside in the pouring rain. I wore a rain coat and a hat. It stinks at first, but then you feel like a kid and you feel all bad a**! I definitely think you get bonus points for running the rain. If it is a downpour than I just opt for other things like the treadmill, bike, or elliptical or a video. We realized that we love to workout so over the years we have invested in a small gym set up with the above mentioned equipment, adjustable weights, and various bands and mats. I have just started P90x3 and LOVE IT!

Garmin! I love my Garmin, I could write poems about my Garmin :lovestruc
I have the Garmin 210. I bought it last year for myself for Mother's Day. There was a sale on Garmin's website. My sister used the Nike+, but it was very inaccurate so she just upgraded to the Garmin. My dad uses MapMyRun, but like you, I do not like having to look at my arm while running and it is hard to read the screen, plus it eats data and batteries on my phone. Also, my arm is too small for the arm band and phone so it bounces around and annoys me.

Today I did Yasso 800s which was so much fun! Well, it at least broke up my 5 miles and made me feel strong. The premise is that you run 800m (about 1/2 mile) at a fast pace, say a 10 min/mi pace. That means you ran it in 5 mins so if you do this starting out repeating 5 times with 5 min walk breaks in between, you can predict a 5 hr marathon time. I want to get my marathon to 4 hrs so today I ran 5 repeats at a 7:56 pace. It was great, but man was I a sweat bucket. I definitely am a sweater (not the furry kind the drippy kind). I think I will keep these in my weekly plans. DH was doing P90x3 while I was running and he said it was a great workout, I do it tomorrow. I love the mix up.

Ok time to do work, although I would rather hang out on here all day with you ladies! Oh, this weekend I hope to go to Marshall's or TJMaxx and start finding things for my costume. I am going Mary Poppins so I want to get a white running skirt and shirt that I can alter so I don't want to spend good money on them, but I want them to be comfy. Lululemon is my go to for running stuff, but it is way pricey for sewing bows on.

I happen to be a semi-expert on ITBS right now, but I'm happy to report that I seem to be improving.

It starts out as a sensation outside of the knee on one leg or the other. At first it doesn't hurt, but you start to "notice" it - tightness perhaps is the best way to describe it. If you continue to walk or run, then the sensation gradually increases to pain. It becomes a little difficult to bend the leg and walk up or down stairs (walking down is especially difficult).

Treatment is R-I-C-E = Rest + Ice + Compression + Elevation. I've also been taking a Motrin about a half-hour before workouts and using a foam roller and performing leg lifts.

After about a week of not running, I was able to run/walk/run for 2 miles last night at 15s/45s intervals wearing a compression brace on my left knee. I walked the final mile just to be safe. I hope to run/walk/run a full 3 miles on Thursday.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for the explanation and tips. It really isn't that bothersome, I'm just aware of it. I don't want it to become a problem! I'm glad yours is getting better.

My dad sent me a similar picture from San Angelo yesterday. I wouldn't want to leave my house at all!

I am having trouble getting the scale to move in the right direction. I am weight training on my non run days, so I keep telling myself I am building muscle. I could stand to lose at least 30 pounds though, so I feel like I should be making more progress than I am. :/

We had torrential downpours and tons of flooding here yesterday! Our area has cleared out for the most part but there was so much flooding a lot of people are flooded in place, without power and have standing water in their homes. It's crazy! My husband has the day off work as a result as roads are still flooded and have washed away. If my run route is clear I will try to squeeze in a run. Our church is hosting lunch and dinner since so many are without power, including us, so hopefully I'll be able to charge my phone there.

DH and I are going to do Donald & Daisy. Donald is his favorite. It's a good idea to start looking now for costume pieces! I didn't think to look at TJ Maxx, etc. great idea!

It's the Garmin Forerunner 10! It's a GPS watch and tracks distance! It doesn't have a heart rate monitor. I'm going to get the new Samsung Galaxy 5 this year and it tracks your heart rate so I'll have that soon :)

Thanks. I forgot to say that I use Runkeeper on my phone. It logs the workouts and shows splits, pace, route and distance. I think it's pretty accurate. I bought DH an UP band for Christmas. He didn't use it right away so I tried it out for him. It synced with my phone to see how many steps I took. It would tell me total calorie burn for the day, tracked sleep, etc. I may get myself one. ;)
