Who: Peter (Me), Wendy (DW), Michael (DS,blond), Patrick (DS,Brown)

Where: Fort Wilderness Campground

When: March 22-28 2014

What: This was our first trip to Disney World and the boys first Disney experience. Wendy grew up in Southern California and I moved out there after college so we are Disneyland and California Adventure veterans and former annual pass holders, we used to live 5 miles from Disneyland, but moved to Pennsylvania 12 years ago.

We had been talking that we needed to get the boys to Disney for a while, we finally pulled the trigger and booked the trip in August 2013. We are a camping family, we have camped in National Parks, State Parks, and private campgrounds in multiple states and had recently upsized from a small popup camper to a 25' Travel Trailer so Fort Wilderness seemed like a perfect fit for us.

I was the primary trip planner and as a planner I really liked My Disney Experience and FP+. I knew going in there was no way were going to be able to see and do everything, so I liked that I could schedule our ADRs and FP+ in advance and have them all available in one place on my phone and at times that would work for us. During our week there the few times while in the park that I wanted to change experiences or move times around I was able to do so on my phone without any problem.

We told the boys about the trip as soon as we booked so they had the excitement of helping plan what attractions we made must dos and things they had no interest in doing. During the winter the boys would get any thing in the mail fro Disney, like the luggage tags and Magic Bands.

I was really happy to have this trip to plan to keep me occupied this winter. This winter was one of the harshest we have had with cold temperatures and was the 2nd snowiest in history. For much of the year the camper sat under a blanket of snow.

We also spent the winter buying small things to Disneyize (is that a word??) the camper.

Bowls,

Mickey Dish Scrubber, Trash Can, and Hand Towels

Donald Duck lights for the awning

Vinyl Decals for the camper and truck

The weekend before and the week of the trip I spent most of the time getting the truck and camper prepped. The truck got new brake pads, an oil change, new air filter and topped off all the other fluids. We also bought a couple new portable DVD payers and a few Disney movies to keep the boys occupied on the 18 hour drive. A few days before the trip the temperature warmed up just enough so I could dewinterize and sanitize the water system in the camper, I also got the battery charged and reinstalled and made sure everything was working.

The day before we left we got the camper packed up with clothes and food, and the bikes loaded up on the roof of the truck. The plan was to take two days to drive down.

On Friday we pulled out of the out of the driveway at 2:12 a.m. This was to be south of Baltimore/Washington D.C./Richmond before the morning rush hour started and avoid the traffic. The plan worked great we cruised through the cities without a problem and our first gas stop/bathroom break was Petersburg VA a little after 6:00 a.m., we grabbed a package of donuts and go-gurt from the camper for breakfast and got back on the road.

Our next gas stop was in South Carolina around lunch time so we stopped for lunch at a Shoney's, the first of many all you can eat restaurants we would hit this week. We also hit the only traffic of the day in South Carolina, slowed us down for about 20 minutes to make it past an accident, the rest of the time the cruise was set at 68 mph.

Our final gas stop of the day was in Kingsland, GA. We then pulled into our destination for the night, the Jacksonville North/St. Marys KOA, about 14 hours and 800 miles south of where we started from. The campground was nice, very convenient to I-95, with level pull through sites, I decided not to even unhitch the camper from the truck. When we checked in they told us they sold Pizza and Barbeque and all we had to do was let them know what time we wanted it delivered, after a full day on the road not cooking sounded good to us so we ordered a pizza for the boys, ribs for me and a pulled pork sandwich for Wendy, it was all very good.

After dinner we stretched our legs some and walked around the campground and the boys rode their bikes. The boys did great on the long drive down, the DVD players were a hit along with our normal license plate and spot the water tower games. It was also very nice ending the day with temps in the 70's since we started it with the temps in the upper 20's.:)

Our site for the night

We were up early and had breakfast at the campsite and were on the road at 7:30. The campground did offer a free breakfast but it didn't start until 8:00 and we didn't want to wait that long. The drive was going really well until we hit Orlando were it slowed to a snails pace, we didn't even think about it until we were passing the arena but Orlando was hosting some of the NCAA Tournament games.

About 11:00 we were pulling into Disney World

We had booked a preferred site and we did our online check in we had requested the 100 loop, up near the marina and Trails End but when we got to check-in there were none of those sites available. They gave us the choice of parking in the overflow lot and waiting for a preferred site or taking a premium site in the 1400 loop near the Meadows Recreation Area. Since we wanted to get setup on the site then head to the Magic Kingdom we took the site that was ready.

We ended up in Site 1439. It was a little tricky backing in since we were on a curve, luckily the people in the site across from us were and were nice enough to move their van to give us a little bit better angle to get into the site.

Once we were backed in we started setting up. We got all the utilities hooked up. We moved the picnic table to behind the camper for a little more privacy. We put the Donald Duck lights on the awning.

The site was right next to the comfort station and on the path to the recreation area right near where they hold the Chip and Dale sing along and outdoor movie every night.

After we got set up we had lunch at the campsite and then got ready to head over to the Magic Kingdom.

We have had site 1439 twice before, we really liked being close to the comfort station and the Meadows area.

Looking forward to reading more about your trip.

I'm in. Want to hear more!

Looking forward to updates! :)

Thanks for reading everyone. We really liked the spot we got, great access to the comfort station and recreation area, and not having another site on the one side of us made our site feel bigger.

So after we had set up camp and had lunch it was time to head to the Magic Kingdom. We found the bus stop and in a few minutes the bus took us to the Settlement area where we just missed the boat but in another ten minutes the next boat was coming to the dock, and after a short ride we were at the Magic Kingdom.

Waiting for the Boat

Here it comes

We are on our way

Arriving at the Magic Kingdom

After we arrived on of the first things we did was hit the hat store, after a long winter we were all a little pale and Michael burns easily and with Patrick's short hair we were worried about his scalp burning. Before we left we had talked to the boys about getting Mouse Ears and both of them had said they didn't really think they would like them, so we were thinking they would probably go for a Goofy hat or maybe a Donald Hat, but that was until they saw the R2-D2 ears and both of them had to have them.

Finally it was time to ride some rides so we headed to Adventure Land and got in line for Pirates of the Caribbean.

The boys in line for Pirates with their new ears.

After Pirates we got in line for Jungle Cruise, on of my favorite rides. After Jungle Cruise we had some time before our first FP+ of the day at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad so we decided to go meet Woody and Jessie. I was surprised how reluctant my 7 year old was to meet them since he has been a huge Toy Story fan, he has a cowboy themed room and countless Woody and Buzz toys around the house and we have met characters at other amusement parks before. But once he got up to the front of the line he seemed to get over his shyness.

After meeting Woody and Jessie we were in our FP+ window for BTMR. Michael isn't a big rollercoaster fan so he was a little nervous but Patrick loves them and was really excited. When we got off the ride Patrick was saying it was totally awesome and Michael decided he liked it too.

After BTMR we decided to get dinner at Pecos Bills. After dinner we had time before our next FP+ for the Main Street Electrical Parade so we did the Country Bear Jamboree, Haunted Mansion and The Hall of Presidents and bought the boys some LED light up necklaces. The boys really liked the interactive things in line while waiting for Haunted Mansion and Michael held my hand during the ride so I wouldn't get too scared. Patrick is a history buff so he really liked the Hall of Presidents.

It was time to head over to the hub for the Parade. I am glad we used a FP+ for the Parade it was nice to be able to show up a few minutes before it started and still have a great place to view it from.

Waiting for the Parade to start

The Parade

After the parade we headed to Tomorrow Land and road Stitch's Great Escape, the boys love Stitch and loved the ride but Wendy and I could have done with out the burp smells and whatever the liquid was supposed to be that hit her in the face.

After Stitch we were in our window for our last FP+ of the day at Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. We all like this ride other than the fact that Wendy had a higher score than me. Unfortunately Wendy and Michael's ride photo didn't take so we got back in the standby line to ride again. She beat me again, I must have had a defective gun two rides in a row :confused3. This time we were able to get their ride photo. We did purchase Memory Maker before the trip and found it easy to use and it was very nice throughout the week to be able to have our entire family in a lot of pictures.

After Buzz we headed to Space Mountain and got in line, the wait time was about an hour. About a half hour in Michael decided he really needed to go to the bathroom and he couldn't hold it so he and Wendy made their way out of line and said they would meet us when we were done. When we got off the ride Patrick was beaming he loved it so much.

After we found Wendy and Michael, who can not keep a secret, he immediately told us that they had gotten ice cream while they were waiting for us while Patrick was trying to tell him just how awesome Space Mountain was. At this point it was after 11:00 and had been a very long day so we headed for the exit to catch the boat back to Fort Wilderness and then the bus back to the 1400 Loop and then get some sleep.

Technically it was my second trip but it had been so long, about 30 years, it felt like a first trip. First trip was either 1984 or 1985

Joining in...need to go back and read. I was there during that time too.....crazy crowds that week!
I also just took my very first trip to DL a month ago. I loved it and we may be going back next year.
