A talented guy who used poor judgement frequently in his life. To be honest, I am more bothered by him deciding to plow into Ray Fosse during the 1970 All Star Game than any of his other transgressions later in his career.

I had him on several flights over the years. He was always a pleasure to have onboard. (same cannot be said for other Reds players) No doubt he had his flaws, but we all do.

An absolute legend in Cincy. Rest easy.

Gambling addiction is an illness. He paid for his mistakes. He doesn’t need the hall of fame. He will always have his place in history. Pete rose and the big red machine were a big part of my growing up years as a reds fan. I wish baseball was like it was back then.

We saw that Max documentary about him recently. I never really knew the whole story. I am not really a baseball expert, but he seemed to be a likable guy. I know he was my uncle's hero. My uncle who lives in Cincinnati is a big Reds fan and in his younger days would go to a lot of games to see him play.

Watched him play many times. Still have some pictures. Always played the same, tough. A neighbor of mine pitched for the Big Red Machine. I asked him not long ago about Pete. He told me as a pitcher there was no one you wanted behind you but Pete Rose. He would be any pitchers first pick. Obviously one of the best players ever.

His defense? “I thought they were 16 years old”… legal in Ohio.

Think about this if you have teenage daughters.

And then when asked about it recently, he said: “that was 50 years ago, lady”. No remorse at all.

Imagine the trauma of a child abuse victim for that time.

I’m not sad he is not in the HOF.
Let’s remember Dikembe who actually did good in the world as a humanitarian.

The baseball player was my favorite growing up, the person not so much. There have been rumors for years that baseball would not allow him in the HOF while still alive -- Pete was known for monetizing everything. Now that he is deceased, look for his enshrinement in the next two to three years. When this happens, there will be a movement to get shoeless Joe Jackson in the Hall.

We lived in Cincinnati during the era of the Big Red Machine. My first baseball games were at Riverfront to watch the Reds. While I was pretty certain I was going to marry Johnny Bench, watching Pete Rose was exciting. Granted, I was very young and many of those memories have faded. Still, it got me interested in the game. His life off the field definitely had its issues, but he was an incredible player.

There is a thread on Dikembe, I don’t think he’s being forgotten about.

I’m not happy or sad that Pete Rose in not in the hall of fame, doesn’t effect me either way. But he does not deserve to be as he broke the rules against gambling. These rules and the consequences of breaking them are posted in the locker rooms. He took a chance and got caught. But he is amongst the best that ever played. If not the best. Some forget how many positions he played over his career.

Talented baseball player but a lousy human being. He agreed to a lifetime ban from the Hall of Fame. Now that he's dead, I imagine people will try to get him inducted. I hope not.

I agree. The way he played made me love baseball
I dont think he was treated fairly in the alleged cheating scandal. Nowadays athletes probably do this all the time without consequences. I was hoping they would reinstate his status and put him in the baseball Hall of Fame, but no.

Pete was also a player/manager at one point. He was an active player until he was 45.

That said, a local sports reporter made a point on the radio this morning when he said that Pete will never get into the hall of fame. He has been banned from baseball and no one is going to reverse that decision. He said that for those who think his punishment was too harsh, they are not punishing the man, they are punishing the sin. Betting on baseball is against rule # 21 and he broke the rule. There is no changing that.

I believe if Pete admitted it from the beginning, things could have been different for him.

I was there in Cincinnati during his hitting streak. Johnny Bench was still there. We ate at Johnny Bench’s restaurant, “Johnny Bench’s Home Plate”. R.I.P Pete!

I went to a game when he was with the Phillies when he accomplished some kind of hitting record. It was the first game back after a two month long player’s strike/lockout in 1981.

I wasn’t intending to go; a co-worker had an extra ticket and asked me about 2 hours before game time. We had less than desirable nosebleed seats in the outfield.
