I started a new job about a month ago as a Dispatcher for the local police department. I finally had orientation this week, along with about 10 other people who have started working for the city in the past month.

Most of the orientation was done off of PowerPoint (which is annoying in itself), but my problem is that they were ALL riddled with horrible spelling mistakes. They were basic mistakes like a/an, your/you're, their/they're, weather/whether, to/too. The person leading the orientation actually stopped the PowerPoint once because he noticed he made a typo on a word, but never picked up on any of the other mistakes. I mean really, we're a fairly large city, and we employ about 1500 people.. you'd think they would do a better job editing and proofreading things before they actually used them.

We're only halfway through orientation today, and a couple other girls and I are all going nuts. :lmao: It's going to be a loooong day, I think...

They're just getting you prepared for the abbreviations you'll be using on the job (recovering dispatcher here). ;)

Sadly, I think it's a sign of the times. It seems that proper spelling, punctuation and grammar are all going the way of the dinosaur.

:lmao: I've been doing it about a month so far, and the abbreviations haven't been TOO bad - it's been the officers who sound like they have marshmallows in their mouth all the time!

Agreed. I couldn't believe it a few years ago when I started seeing misspellings on the captions under the photos on network TV. Sadly, I see many more today than I did then and no one seems to notice. :sad2:

misspellings drive me nuts too!!

Captioning errors don't bother me as much - it depends on if it's a live feed or not. Around here, the TV stations use the teleprompter text for the captioning - so there shouldn't be too many errors. But if you are watching a live event, or Oprah, or news in a major market - expect a few errors. The captioning is done on the fly by court reporters who are working from home and getting the audio feed only. They use the special court reporting machines instead of a normal keyboard.

Oooohhhh....this is SO frustrating; I'm right there with you! I'm appalled at the number and TYPE of spelling/grammar mistakes that are made on and in public signs, pamphlets, websites, etc. around here. Does anyone competent proofread these days???

I am right there with you too. That would have driven me crazy... I am a 6th grade teacher, and I am constantly correcting grammar mistakes!!! :worship: The TV mistakes are the worst - especially on the news, and it seems to happen all the time!

Our local paper is horrible with basic spelling and grammar. I find it ironic that the editorial writers are always railing about the deficiencies of the public education system in town, yet the paper is filled with errors. I guess they'd say it's because they hire graduates of the local public schools.

Anyhow, the funniest error I can remember is an article about a winter time slay ride. I think I'd pass on that one.

I got the offical letter about my promotion to technical operator from work about 2 weeks ago. It stated that my job as a tech op began 12th September 200!!!!!!!!!!!! So according to them I have been working at that job for 1810 years (I was told if there was a delay in the pay grade I would get back pay I would really like neary 2000 years of back pay!)

By all means point out their mistakes - I am sure they would be happy to correct their errors:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I am sure you have learned boots should remain silent

It is hard to bite your lip but in the long run, until you are in command - bite!! Bite really hard.
