Personal Item on an Airplane

Hi all - Let me preface this by saying that I am not a frequent flyer by any means.

We will be flying Frontier, which allows one free personal item, on our upcoming trip.

I am aware of the bag dimensions limitations, and have a backpack which meets the requirements.

My question is - Am I able to put my laptop bag inside my backpack, or is this considered two personal items? Will the laptop bag have to be removed from the backpack to go thru security, making it two separate personal items?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

The airline doesn't care (or know) how many bags you bring through security. Boarding the plane with carryons/personal items and going through security are separate processes. I would go through security with two bags (backpack and laptop bag) just to make it easier to remove the laptop, and anything else, like charger, they may ask for. Then after security pop your laptop bag into your back and board the plane. No need to be clandestine about it - it's perfectly fine to put a bag inside another bag, and it only counts as one bag.

If it fits in the one personal bag it will only count as one item. Like others have said it will have to come out for security so just pop it back in before boarding.

If you can fit it in the backpack then its one bag.

The laptop itself needs to come out of the bag during security.

Security does not care how many bags you have.

Just keep your laptop in your backpack until you get to security. Then take laptop out. Then put it back in when you're through. I have a purse that is like a sash. I usually wear it on the plane. I have a flight attendant ask me why I had two personal items. I just put the sash bag in my backpack and all is well.

I do something similar all the time. I have a small purse and a backpack. I like the purse out in the airport so I can get to my ID, cash, store my phone, etc. But I'll stick it in the backpack to board so I only have the one underseat bag. As long as it all fits in one bag and that bag meets the size requirements, you're good.

I flew last week and had my backpack and purse both under the seat (separate) and nobody said anything. They both fit.
If anyone had cared I would have been able to put the purse inside the backpack.

Rules for personal items can vary by airline so be sure to check the website of the carrier you are flying. On smaller aircraft or when the plane is fairly full, they can be more particular about the number/size of those items.

Yes you can put the other bag inside of the other as long as it will fit under the seat in front of you. As longs as your bag is the size stated for Frontier you will not have an issue. I have flown them before with a stuffed backpack with 3 days of clothes and stuff and had no issues. Just don't pull the other one out if you are standing in line to board. I read where some one did this and they made her pay for an additional bag all because she pulled out her purse from her personal bag.. So wait till you are on board.

This has been my general experience as well. I fly Frontier all the time and often have to take extra bags for medical reasons. So far I've never been asked why I had more than one, but they always fit under the seat in total so I think as long as that's the case they may not care. Ironically, the only time anyone gave me a hard time was on a Jetblue flight where we paid for 5 seats and were allowed one carry on and one personal item per seat and I only had 4 carry on and 4 personal items yet she grilled me about where I was going to fit everything. I put bags inside of bags to make her happy.
