I was in traffic for 45 minutes last night trying to drive friends home from Boston. This is why. :(

What kind of moron does not put a child in a seatbelt????

We worry about or DOG in the car (that he is restrained and not near an airbag etc.) ; how can people let their 11 year olds ride in cars without seatbelts on on the highway.

I hope the girl makes it. :( I don't know if her parents were in the car. There were two 25 year olds so I doubt they are the 11 year olds parents but who knows...

5 seriously injured in Wilmington accident

By ROBERT MILLS, Sun Staff
WILMINGTON Five people were seriously injured, including a child, in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 93 south last night that closed the highway for roughly 45 minutes and created traffic backups for miles.
State police said a light blue Geo Tracker driven by Denise Carnazzo, 40, of Everett, went out of control about a mile before Route 125, struck another vehicle and then hit the guardrail on the right side of the highway about 9:30 p.m.

The other vehicle was only grazed and was able to be driven away from the scene.

An 11-year-old Everett girl and another of the small sport utility vehicle's five occupants were ejected, with the girl suffering serious injuries, according to Sgt. Stephen Viola.

Police found her over the guardrail in a wooded area off the right side of the road. An unidentified occupant was found on the highway's shoulder, Viola said.

The girl was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital by Medflight, which landed on the highway.

Also in the car was Elaine Hayes, 25, and Dennis Hayes, 20, both of Everett, and a 15-year-old Malden boy. Everyone but the 11-year-old was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital by ambulance. They had minor injuries, according to police.

The Tracker remained in the passing lane as traffic squeezed past the scene in the highway's far right lane. It sustained only moderate damage to the front and sides.

"The vehicle stayed intact pretty well," said Viola. "If seat belts had been worn we wouldn't have this situation."

Viola said excessive speed played a role as well. Police said no charges were filed last night but that they would be forthcoming against Carnazzo.

Police closed the southbound side of the highway for about 45 minutes while the victims were cared for and while troopers started accident reconstruction, which was ongoing until about midnight.

Traffic was backed up nearly 10 miles to Interstate 495 while the highway was closed, and remained backed up past the Dascomb Road exit in Tewksbury just before midnight.

The highway was fully opened about 11:45 p.m.

 that angers me beyond belief. children as well as adults should always wear seatbelts regardless of how old they are. i hope the little girl is okay and that the people driving the car will learn their lesson!

I don't care what speed someone is driving EVERYONE in the car should be properly restrained. It's not just older kids that aren't wearing seatbelts, I've seen plently of little kids not in their car/booster seat. I hope she makes it. Her parents must be beside themselves. I wonder who the "adults" in the car were.

Unbelieveable. And frankly, if the adult dosen't want to wear the seatbelt...then... whatever, but it's their resposibility to make sure the minors are buckled in...it's LAW here!

It's the law here too! Apparently this moron did not get the memo. There haven't been any updates in the paper about the girls status. I hope she is getting better but I don't know. :(

I saw the wreckage of the car. :(

Very irresponsible! Ugh. These things make me so angry! Why do people make it such a big deal to put on a seatbelt!!! Sad, very sad.
