PayPal payments: How long to clear?

I purchased a camera on eBay (a used DSLR) on Sunday and paid through PayPal. The seller will ship it when he has received payment. I know Sunday is not a business day but it has still not reflected in his account although it was already on my cc statement yesterday.

My own fault really, but I have 3 weeks to find my way around a new camera before going away so I am anxious to have it shipped. Just wondered if it takes longer for payment to process for a private seller than for a business seller. The other 2 items I bought from eBay shops the same day have already arrived. :confused3

Odd :confused3 whenever I've used Paypal as either a buyer or a seller it's been immediate.

Yup same here! Unless he is waiting until it's cleared into his actual bank account?? Not sure about in the US but normally takes 3-5 business days for that here.

Well this is here in the UK. I am actually getting slightly annoyed about it now. Maybe I wouldn't have been had the other two small items from 2 different sellers not arrived today even though I purchased them afterwards. I sent him an email again today asking if he had received payment and no reply. Of course he could have not checked the message, but still - having parted with a fair amount of money and paid for next day special delivery I am not very pleased about this.

Do I have any recourse if he doesn't hurry up with it, within reason? I mean push this an extra few days and it will be pointless actually getting the thing by that stage.

Is he a fairly new seller or a seller with a low feedback score??

It could depend if he is a new seller with a low score, paypal will not release payment to the seller (even though they have taken it from you) until either he recieves good feedback from you, or 21 days has passed, obviously if you havent had the item, then never leave feedback, however if that is the case he might not release the item until the 21 days have passed.

Paypal still says he should post the item straight away, however some sellers are not complying with this and are worried to send the item without first having the funds cleared in their account.

As in the other's experiences, paypal has been immediate for myself too.

If this doesn't go to plan or whatever, I'm pretty sure that Paypal offer you some sort of protection
Not exactly sure what, but they may be able to help?

Hope it gets sorted soon

Thanks. I will read the link you posted. :)

He has a good score (I only buy from highly rated sellers) and was very prompt with all the initial correspondence. Even last night when I sent a question about the battery life he got back to me quickly. I can't wait 21 days! But as you say, I will not leave feedback until I have the item. Trouble is, with the money out of my account I won't have time to fiddle with returns and refunds before my trip with sufficient time to purchase one elsewhere. Probably just a case of the seller wanting to be sure he has the funds which is fair enough. I don't know if there is any point contacting PayPal about this. Will read your link first.

Thanks.

No worries, I hope you get it sorted, there seems to be a few reasons that they can hold payment including these few as well, esp may apply to the bottom one. Let us know how you get on.

They have a high rate of customer disputes or a low eBay feedback percentage.

They have been a PayPal member for less than 6 months and have limited selling activity.

They have a sudden change in selling activities (e.g. suddenly selling expensive items, selling large numbers of items, etc.)

They happen to be selling in a high risk category such as tickets, travel, gift vouchers, computers, electronics, mobile phones, etc.

Thanks Sue. I am feeling a bit silly about this actually. It is only 2 working days. The seller has been listed for over a year. Private seller, not a business so obviously not the same volume as some of them, but still, has good reviews. I will give him until tomorrow night and then contact him again and ask if there is a problem. Perhaps he has been scammed or given the run around by a buyer at some point and is overly cautious so I don't want to be unfair. After all, my poor planning - just the night before I went to bed having made the decision it was not a good idea to get a new camera so soon before my trip. Then the auction was nearly closed and I could actually afford the item, put in a bid, won it and spent a couple of hours in shock. :rotfl: Not that I regret it - I will get at least my money back if need be by relisting, but I am hoping that won't be the case.

hi the only problem you can get with paypals is the electronic cheque this can take upto 10 days to clear.
i have had a few my self from buyers iver the year.

Hi, update. Just got an email from the seller. Very apologetic, but he can't find the camera box. He has offered for me to cancel. Not sure what to do. I am going to try and negotiate if he knocks xx off the price by way of refund and sends it special delivery today I will take it. Pressure!! What do you think?

He hasn't had time to check the account

You could be right about the price. Lol, we will see what he says when I make a lower offer! To be honest, one of the reasons I am loathe to cancel the transaction is that I picked up a good DSLR for £160. Okay no box now and even if the manual doesn't come I have downloaded the PDF to read this week anyhow. Similar cameras were going for over £100 more. I think I will try and negotiate, see what he says. He certainly comes across as genuine. He has emailed me his mobile and landline no. and offered for me to give him a call if I wish, but said he will refund immediately if I would rather cancel. I am a little concerned as to how he is going to secure a DSLR and lens in the mail without the original box though.

If he is a good ebayer, he should have no problem finding a suitable box and loads of bubble wrap, and making sure its securley wrapped. I think you may have got a bargain, and he doesnt want to let it go at that price, you will soon find out how he really feels about it if you offer a lower price again because of the box lol. :)

I think you have some good points here. I have nothing to lose by making a lower offer. My brother said he would cancel (he's seriously into his photography and also our successful business man in the family ;)). However I suspect his decision is that he is pro Canon and this is Nikon :lmao: Seriously though, he said if I am happy with the deal my only drawback would be not having sufficient time before my trip to familiarise myself to get the most out of it. But I knew that anyway and intended it not to be my only camera because of this. I will let you know how I get on. Hmmm, I do love me a bargain :rotfl:

Also, sometimes, odd as it sounds, people sell originalempty boxes on eBay :confused3 I always wondered why - now I see some merit in it.

I agree with Sue - sounds like he is stalling because you got a bargain and he's hoping to relist it. I would take it if you think it is a bargain.

A few enquiries with some photography buffs and it appears this would be correct. In terms of the bargain that is. ;)

Well it's on it's way! I have the tracking number which he emailed to me, he accepted my offer and actually reduced the price even further saying it wasn't my fault. The PayPal refund came through by notification to my email at lunch time too. I feel quite bad actually. I think this is just a really nice guy. He also said if I need any help with any of the settings or getting started to feel free to contact him at any time. :guilty:

I just wanted to thank each of you for all your support and advice. I am really pleased that I am getting my camera after all. Had I not had the support of everyone here I may have just cancelled. So a great big :thanks::thanks::thanks: to my faithful DIS buddies!

I'm glad it all worked out, and that you are getting a good bargain.

Have fun with your new camera :)
