Paying your hotel bill at the end (charge card)?

For the meals we have planned etc, we are going to need to take a fair bit of currency. However, I'm not keen on carrying this much around (or leaving in the hotel safe). So, I'd said to DH to maybe take £500 worth of euros and then look to charge everything (I mean big expenses like meals and larger souvenirs) to the hotel charge card and pay at the end.

Would it be possible to use what is left of our euros and then top up payment using our debit card for the balance do you think?

I don't want to be bringing a lot of euros back (although we could use them in Nov at a push) if I can help it.

I recall seeing about travel cash cards etc but I'm not interested in one of those at the moment as it's just one more thing for me to organise :rotfl2:. So, think part cash and part debit card at the end to minimise transaction fees is the way to go if we can.

My only concern with doing this is keeping a tab on what we have spent and not feeling like this :scared1: at the end. But I'm guessing we will be given receipts for everything so can tally up as we go along if need be?

I don't see why not, although I think your card is automatically debited when it reaches something like £300 or £350.

You'll still get a receipt each time you charge something to your room.

Have you thought of getting a fee free credit card? We take enough euros to pay for the shuttles to and from the airport plus small things like drinks, ice-creams etc then pay for meals/shopping on a fee free credit card. If we find out that we've got too many euros left at the end of the holiday we then pay or part-pay with them on our last day rather than using a card. We only charged things to our room once last trip - because we're used to staying offsite and kept forgetting about it! - but if you've got a fee free card then it doesn't matter whether you do everything in one transaction or many.

We used the charge system at HNY this week.

There is a running total and list of what you've spent on the hotel tv system. So it's easy to know what you've spent. We didn't spend too much this time, just by chance of where we ended up eating, under 300E. When we went to check out the receptionist did ask how we would like to pay, and if our card was to be charged or not. So I think you should be able to pay cash ok. Don't do the express check out on the hotel tv though, as this will automatically charge your card.

It's the first time we've used this, and found it really easy :thumbsup2

Can you remember how you check your spends on the Disney chargecard on the TV; as we couldn't work out how to do it last year. Thanks:thumbsup2

Go to the home screen, where it has your name. Then use the arrow to the right, it goes to 'my account' and press the centre button, I think it says 'ok'. Then I think you use the arrow down and highlight the 'my account' again, this should show a list of everywhere you've spent. :thumbsup2

Thank you so much:thumbsup2 - will save us queueing up at reception every night to get a run off of our account!:cool1::cool1:

Thank you for the replies.

To be honest Elaine, I'm just not keen to get a card - it's another thing to keep track of etc.

I didn't realise about the debiting after a certain amount is reached - a meal at Inventions & Auberge and we'll be at that total already! :scared1:

Julie - you can't be back already!!! Surely not!!! Where has the time gone??? Off to frantically read rest of board now to find out about your trip! :goodvibes
