OK, I'm new to the recital thing. DD has only been in one this past June and we were given 2 Tix. Additional were $10.00, which I thought was a LOT. We just used the freebies.

For the Winter recital, there are NO free tix. All tix $10.00. I'm annoyed.

What's the norm for these things? It's a musical recital, she takes vocal lessons.

Thanks!

For a recital? I haven't done one in a while. What is the money going towards? Does it pay for a professional accompanist? Are the recitals at a special location? The voice teacher isn't pocketing all this, is he/she? Is there a reception afterward? Just curious.

We don't have to pay for tickets for Chelsea's dance recitals and you can bring as many people as you want.

We do however have to pay a $75 recital fee. It covers the auditorium rental, stage crew and security. It used to be just $50, but the recitals are getting longer and longer. We're now up to 5 days. 2 dress rehearsals and 3 recital nights. Thank goodness it's only once a year. :)

For our dance recitals we pay a recital fee. It pays for the auditorium rental and the costumes. No tickets at all, anyone can attend. I think last year's fee was around $85. It sort of depends on the costuming.

I feel your pain. My daughter is involved in drama. I pay $85 per month for the drama class. I also pay for any requested costumes (sometimes it's a lot, sometimes it's nothing). When they have a show, it costs $5 per ticket. It doesn't seem like a lot, but when I pay for my family to go, we spend about $20 for the show. I am hesitant to invite friends, etc. Some of my friends have younger kids that would enjoy the show, but they also find the cost of taking their family a little bit too much.

I don't quite know what to do about it (nothing) but it can get expensive. I guess they have to pay to use the auditorium. But, they were even charging for when they had the show in their own spaces.

For my DD's dance recitals, we pay $13 per ticket, with a maximum of 6 tickets being allowed per family. If you want more than 6 tickets, it's a special request and they are then not with the first 6 tickets you got, it's basically granted after all other families have gotten their tickets. I also have to pay around $80 for her recital costume. Our recital is 2 days of rehersals and then 2 shows on one day.

My daughters are both at the college level and play many recitals and concerts. For the departmental recitals we pay nothing but for concerts each student gets 1 comp ticket and we pay for the other tickets. For example, my oldest was playing in a concert with the Miami String Quartet and her sister was not. Each got a comped ticket but youngest wanted to go since the violist in the Miami String Quartet is her teacher and my daughter is the violist in the Pez Quartet (FIU graduate quartet). I used DD#1 comped ticket and we paid $20 for my husband's ticket. Gets expensive when they do 10 or more concerts per semester. Fortunately most of the time both are in the concert and Mom and Dad can use the comped tickets. DD#2 is second chair violist in orchestra and DD#1 is principal.

My DD has been dancing for the last 5 years and they rent out an auditorium for the recital.... Last years tickets were $15.00 of which we were given none free.

I used to buy all of her grand parents tickets but it just got too pricey. They also want you to buy one for the student if they are in the 1st half of the show.

I never do as the parents of little ones usually take their children home after the first half and there are more than enough seats available. But my DD has been in the second half all but 1 time.

At my dd's last dance school, the recital was held in our middle school. The dance teacher's only cost was the fee for the custodians. (which can be pretty high) After paying dance tuition every month, then for the costumes, you were expected to pay $12 a ticket. At the studio she dances at now, the instruction is a little less, the costumes a little more and we are still paying for tickets. But, at least here, they have to pay quite a lot for the auditorium they dance at. It is quite lovely and of historic importance. I do think that the studios could 'give' each family 2 free tickets. But, to date, no one has.

My daughter also dances. We pay $8 per ticket with a 6 ticket maximum until all families have their first set of tickets. Then we can request more but they are not with the first set (just like jel0511).

goofy4tink - where does your daughter dance? We are in NE CT and are looking in the Central MA area for a new studio for DD11. I'd love to hear your experiences in that area. Please feel free to PM me or email me at mamamouse@snet.net

My nieces do dance and their tickets are in the 10.00-15.00 range(I forget exactly). There are no freebies and theres a limit per family. Like others have said, extras can be requested, after everyone has gotten their minimums, but those extras arent guaranteed.

Yikes:eek: ! Must be a regional thing. We only pay for DD's(8yrs) costume(about $50) and no recital fee. Anyone can come and it is held in a very nice auditorium at the university. It is a class act all the way too. :D Maybe our monthly fees are more($34 a month for 1 hour a week), or the costume price absorbs some. I feel fortunate now::yes:: !

Must Be! We pay $75.00 per month for a 3/4 hour Tap class and a 1 hr Ballet class.

Costumes are $66.00 per number (up $6.00 from last year) Not including Tights.

Then the $15.00 PP for the seats. But it is a top notch show and I'm glad she does it.

I can't relate with recitals but we have to pay to get in J.C.'s football and basketball games. We also have to pay to get into the school plays. The money goes back into the school. J.C. goes to a small private school so I think every penny they can make is important...>LOL!!

I wish I had a little girl to be in recitals!

Both my girls are in dance. It's $50 for each costume and we are up to 7 costumes. I pay $25 to preregister them in the spring and that's deducted from costumes, so I owed another $300.
Recital is one night and one dress rehearsal (plus some Saturday rehearsals for all the girls for finales) and it was $11 per ticket this year, but that is in a NICE theatre where they do Broadway shows, etc. When it was in a local HS it was $8 per ticket and 2 nights. Now it's much nicer, although it ran long in 2002.
DD#2 may quit after this year and it's up to her, not going to force her (hey, it will save me $$$!) but I've already paid for the 2004 recital costumes.

Admission to DDs dance recital is $10 and each costume runs about $70. Deposits for the costumes are due by December 1 this year (during key Christmas shopping time!) and it's going to cost me $140 in deposits for four costumes. The dance recital is five hours long. I really wish they would split it into two nights or split the night into two sections - the first half for the kids under 10 and the second half for the kids over 10. Since my kids are the same age, I'd never have to stay for the whole thing! By the end of the five hours, those poor little three-year-olds are barely awake (and all the dancers are supposed to stay backstage until the end) and the last dancers performing don't get the attention they should because the only thing I am thinking at that point is "I want to go home. I want to go home."

Wow, so I guess it's NOT unusual. They did say the $10 was going towards sound equipment and hall rental. Good thing we don't do costumes!!!! I'm going to quit complaining about it.

Luckily, they divide the students up and each recital is only 1 hour long.

Thanks for the input!

Having danced for over 25 years (and with a daughter who dances) I can tell you, the costs are well used. Most dance studios don't have an auditorium to have recitals, so renting one is a great expense (and remember, you must pay for each night's rental). You must pay the people who work there (stage crew, lighting, sound, and possibly ushers if they aren't volunteers). I know that recitals run long, but the tickets would be even more if they split the recital into more nights. I can't complain because I only have one child and it's her only extra-curricular activity.

Did someone say 5 hours long:earseek: ! ! Good grief! Ours are split into 3 recitals and DD is in the younger group. Her's runs about 1 hour and they do bring in some high school girls to do a few numbers. The girls get to sit in the balcony and watch the recital-each class has a mom volunteer with them who leads them around to the back before they go on. It works and runs beautifully. The costumes are gorgeous too. :D I have already seen a picture of DD's this year. Last year her class dressed as "Belle", and danced to the music.:D

We changed dance classess because of price. DD started dance when she was 3. They charged $10.00 for tickets, $12 per child to be in a group pic in the program, costumes where like $75.

You were not allowed to tape and the tapes cost 40 per half. She had two dances in each half. The performances were throughout the whole day.

The new studio, every other year they get new costumes $40, free performance and no pics in program. You are allowed to tape. DD is only 5. It would be different if she was older.
