I've been a full-time student and have consequently had the college's insurance plan. I am about to graduate, though, so I won't have it much longer. Dh's plan is way too expensive to add me. I don't even know where to begin. I'm healthy and in my mid 30s. I have no chronic illnesses and have never had a surgery or anything (knock on wood). Where should I look? Any idea what I might pay? Hopefully, I will have a full-time job in fall, but as a teacher graduating mid-year, it's not very likely I'll have anything now.

Can you get COBRA? I got it once and paid $400 a month to keep my Blue Cross Blue Shield. I called other companies, and for slightly "worse" coverage, I was looking at $300-$450 a month. I chose to keep my plan with COBRA for the better coverage.

Check online for the major insurance companies in your area-they will have many individual plans and since you have coverage now, no preexisting conditions to worry about. Also, compare it carefully to your DH's plan as group coverage usually has better coverage and while it may cost more in premiums, your out of pocket overall could be less-especially if you plan on having children.

Wow, that's a bargain. When I left my last company, they gave me the COBRA disclosure and it was $1200 a month just for me.

To the OP, price shop, but it certainly surprises me that your husband's plan isn't the least expensive option.
