Paused to Buy... and I Hesitated... Here's why... ®¿®

For us in 1999 when we were considering buying an offsite timeshare in Orlando vs DVC, it came down to where we wanted to spend the majority of our vacations. We love Disney and agreed that we would travel there for many, many years with our kids as they get older (now 13, 11 and 2) and, hopefully, in 20 years with our grandchildren.

We have had experience with other timeshares in that my in-laws have had two weeks in Key West since 1990. My husband and I haven't been able to vacation with them in recent years because the cost of airfare is so prohibitive during their weeks (sometimes as much as $5K from Boston over the Christmas Holidays). They give us a week of timeshare every couple of years when they trade out, but they have had a really hard time using their weeks anywhere but Key West. Trading into Disney weeks onsite has NEVER been possible. We've managed to use their weeks once in Orlando and once in Colorado, but it's been really frustrating.

So we decided the DVC options for tradeouts with the Adventurer Collection, etc. were better in the long run if we opted to do that. But we bought at Disney DVC because we plan to use most of our points on Disney properties. We do vacation other places (in CA with family and at the beach) but we do those with cash and credit.

As for flexibility in the program itself, I've found it works well. I don't plan our vacations as far ahead as some folks, but I have still been able to patch together memorable trips anyway. I didn't plan our 8/24-9/2 trip to Yacht Club and then Vero until late April and except for one night at Vero for which we are waitlisted for a room upgrade - I have had no difficulty getting what I wanted. We couldn't stay at our home resort BWV, but I love trying new properties and am thrilled that we'll be at the Yacht Club and legitimately be able to use Storm-along-Bay pools in the August heat!

It just really depends on how and where you want to spend your family time and $$$. :Pinkbounc

I love my DVC membership and I won't even stay off WDW property let alone buy a timeshare there, so when I was looking for a vacation timeshare the thought of buying from anyplace but on WDW property was never even an option. I love WDW and have gone on a growing regular basis for years to now I am up to at least 4 trips (9-14 days per trip) a year so I knew I wanted DVC.
However, for people that do not want to stay at WDW there are some very nice timeshare places in the FL area that have just as large of a trading inventory, use the pts system and cost a lot less than a DVC membership. Friends of mine own at a Hilton Timeshare (I am not sure of the exact name) but they pd less than I did, own more pts, and the units and resorts are beautiful. I have seen the one in Orlando and in Old Key West and both are beautiful resorts with very nice and large units. The one in the WDW area is only a 15 min drive to Disney property My friends have been able to trade out to resorts in Hawaii, FL, New England, etc. with no problem. Plus at times they have added on cash nights when they were running out of pts and the cash prices they get for rooms is unbelieveable because they also earn pts from using a credit card that can be used at the Hilton Vacation Clubs, it is a good deal. My friends that own Hilton VC also really love Disney but when they go to FL they stay 5-6 weeks at a time so they use their pts to stay near Disney, in Old Key West , FL, St Augustines,FL, and SC so this works out better for them than just DVC resorts and the main thing they did not like was the fact that there is an end date to when you own. This was really the deciding factor for them.
The point I am trying to make is DVC is not for everyone and from the orginal posters wants and needs, I personally think there are other timeshares in FL that would be more to his wants for less money than DVC. For people that staying on WDW property is a big consideration, myself included, you can't beat DVC; but for people that staying on WDW property is really not a consideration, there are other very nice and just as flexible timeshare properties in FL to be had.
