Hi all, do you need a passport if we drive into Buffalo and fly to Florida?? I think a passport is needed, but but we have family we are travelling with who are still waiting for passports from May so I thought I would confirm.

I know driving over only needs a birth cert..call the US airline and ask them about flying what is needed

https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification

It says here minors don't need ID. I know I was surprised a few years ago when we didn't need to show our kids ID when flying within.

Not sure if it's a minor or not that you're asking about.
You have to get across the border first, that can’t be done without ID.

The OP’s actual question is: “is a passport needed or what ID can also be used to cross a land border and then fly within the US because the family travelling with us don’t have their passports yet?”

Under 16 can cross with a birth certificate

You may want to read the link from US border services. What you have stated isn’t true for adults.
Sorry...just know what the passport officer told me when we tried to get our passports...said you can cross with a BC..then I explained we are taking a plane as well.

To answer the question in your title - no, you do not need a passport to fly within the United States (you can use a Canadian driver's license).

However, to answer the question in your post you DO need a passport to drive across the border into the US (though children could use a birth certificate).

Were you getting passports only for your children? It is true that CHILDREN can cross the border by land and sea with only a birth certificate. It is not true for adults (hasn't been for a long time)./

Thanks all, she applied early May with travel dates noted..she went to office today and they said they had not even been started and were still working on the March/April applications. She showed proof of travel and they saw the date she applied so they are expediting it for a few days before we leave, so she will indeed have passports (adult and child).
