Parking at MK?

I feel silly even asking this, because having been to WDW a couple of times but...where is parking at MK? I know that right outside is the lagoon and then the Poly and GF. If memory serves, don't you park wayyyy far out and ride the tram and then catch the ferry? DH is convinced that there is somewhere to park just outside but I don't think there is. We have ridden the bus and taken the boat from WL everytime we have been. So can someone tell me what the parking situation is like? Thanks!

You have it right. The parking lot is is at the TTC. From the parking lot you take a tram to the TTC and then either a monorail or ferry to MK.

There is no "parking lot" for the MK technically. You have to park at the TTC and then take a bus, the monorail, or the ferry to the MK.

I hesitate to say this, but some people will park at the CR under the guise of eating there, then walk to the MK, or go inside and take the monorail to the MK, going the long way around, of course. I do not condone this, but peopke do it.

I hesitate to mention things like that also. It's probably best not to give explicit advice on how to break rules and inconvenience guests that have a right to be there.

(Not meaning to imply the OP or anyone else posting here would.)

Does anyone know why the park was designed this way? Would it just be too many vehicles around the area that there isn't room?

On our last trip we had breakfast at CM one day and plans to hit a different park, not MK, after. We had to give our name to the security guard and were given a parking pass to put in the window. The pass said it was only good for 3 hours and had the time written on it. The LAST thing I want to deal with on vacation is having the car towed so we won't be trying that trick!

We will be at POR this time and thought that it would be better to take our own car to MK but now I am not so sure. We haven't heard the best about POR busses but it sounds like a big hassle to drive yourself to MK. Maybe since we are going at a time that isn't supposed to be as busy we can give it a try.

I believe the parking was set up in the same manner the rest of WDW was originally planned. Walt Disney was not happy the way things grew up around his Disneyland park. This is why he purchased so much land in Florida. You are on WDW property long before you get to any entrance gates. I have to think he did not want any cars near the Magic Kingdom entrance as this would hurt the image of this magical place.
Someone in my office (another WDW lover) mentioned yesterday to me that once you enter any of the WDW theme parks you can no longer see the parking lots. I never thought of this but he is correct. I think back to my days as a child.....giving away my age here! ;) and going to Palisades Park and Bergen Point, both in New Jersey. From either park you could always see cars both parked and driving by. This is not the kind of view Walt wanted for his Florida Magic Kingdom.

You are correct. Walt felt that once you parked your car your journey to the magical place was begining.
The ferry or the monorail were supposed to wisk you away from reality and into the magic.
I don't think even Walt imagined that there would be so many people waiting in line for 15-20 minutes to be wisked away.
When the Magic Kindom first opened even the buses would take guests to the TTC. A few years later the bus lot was built to try to cut down the crowds at the TTC.
