Park hopper questions

do you need the park hopper tickets if you want to leave a park to go back to your resort, but then go back to the same park later that day? Or, are the hoppers only to go to multiple parks in the same day?

Only to go to multiple in one day. So DHS in the morning, Epcot in the afternoon.

You can leave and go back to the same one all day with a regular non hopper ticket.
