Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

We have a music tent in town that seats 2,300. With just 90 kids in my DD's graduation class I don't think they limit tickets.

Today is supposed to be Senior day for softball at her last home game but it's forecasted to rain around 5pm so I don't know if they'll cancel the 4pm game.


She's 18 today. She's not sure how she feels about it-a bit excited but a bit scared too.

DD had her Softball Senior Night this past Thursday. DH and I got presented on the field with her. She got gifts from her team, and they painted the field with her number, had posters, a pot luck dinner with cake. It was great! They won their game that night and had their first playoff game today. They lost... And I lost it. When she walked off the field for the very last time, I burst into tears. I've been watching this child play softball every season since she was 5 years old. I just can't believe I don't get to do that anymore.

I am loving reading about all of the different traditions and celebrations! Was your DD the only senior on the team or do they each get their own night? DS is one of 9 graduating seniors on his varsity baseball team. Senior night is always the last home game of the regular season, so they had that May 5th. There is a walk across with parents, but the gifts and food are for the banquet and the senior/player parent dinner.

Travel baseball has been a big part of DS's life since he was 8 years old. We've spent many years where the travel tournaments were our only vacation that year because it was a week at the beach or even Disney. The rosters have changed, and kids have moved around the county to different travel teams, but many of these families on his HS team we've known for years, not to mention this is a fantastic group of boys. They lost 0-2 in the 3rd round of the playoffs, and boy were there tears. It was so sad. DS was the last out in the game, and there were runners on 2nd and 3rd, too. I can't believe DS's baseball days are over. He's not playing travel this summer, and will be playing football in college.

My DD's graduation will be at the Kohl Center (the UW's basketball and hockey venue) which holds up to 17,000 people. There is no limit on how many people who can come, LOL!

There's no good reason that DS's can't be at the same sort of place, like most schools in our county, but our past 2 principals have insisted on having it on the football field. I hate it. Rumor has it most of the kids want to graduate at their school. It's a big discussion every year. DD's in 2015 was beautiful weather and a nice ceremony, so it is nice in execution, and the whole thing is caught on video via drone, which is really cool, however, way too much is riding on in NOT raining.

Does anyone else feel like they are in a zombie like state trying to get through it all? We have SO much going on these last few weeks, and while it's all wonderful, I wish we could slow down and enjoy it a little more! 2 proms, baseball playoffs, senior awards night all down! I also worked the after prom party which was a ton of fun, but screwed up my sleeping schedule all weekend. We still have Baseball banquet, senior picnic/grad rehearsals, graduation, and graduation party all this week. Getting everything together for the party is enough, not to mention all the out of town house guests arriving throughout the week.

Oh, and did I mention DS graduates outside, and there is rain in the forecast for graduation day!?!? The contingency is to have it in the school auditorium, where each kid will only get 2 tickets.

We get two tickets also. In the event of rain, other guests are welcome to view the closed circuit tv in the cafeteria or on the screen in the auditorium. With such a small gym, they are very strict about even letting in children under two who sit on laps.

And yes, zombiefied here also. Such a busy two weeks ahead. And she wants to do it all, mostly with friends. Like I can be there, but she's not going there with me!

There were 4 seniors on her team, but they only do one Senior Night. All four senior numbers were painted on the field. We also have an end of season dinner with awards in a couple of weeks. DD was a 4 year Varsity starter and was a team captain the last 2 years. We just found out she made Second Team All Conference for this season! At least she gets to go out with a bang.

My daughter got a letter in the mail today saying she is getting a grant from some Masonic Organization that she applied to- don't know how much its for but who cares- its something even if it just pays for a book I am happy! She goes on June 6th to a ceremony to accept that and then June 8th is scholarship night at the high school.

My daughter received her letter in the mail inviting her to senior awards night which means she will receive something. Today she is "working" at one of our elementary school's Fair Day. They allow seniors from National Honor Society to help run the Fair Day for the younger children. Had our prom dress fittings last night. Academic Awards Ceremony is May 30, Lacrosse Dinner June 7, prom June 9, Senior Award night June 14 and Graduation June 21

My daughter received her letter in the mail inviting her to senior awards night which means she will receive something. Today she is "working" at one of our elementary school's Fair Day. They allow seniors from National Honor Society to help run the Fair Day for the younger children. Had our prom dress fittings last night. Congrats! We skipped Senior Awards Night. My DD didn't want to go and she picked up her honor cord the next day.

I do have a (very minor) brag. My DD got a a scholarship yesterday! She only applied to a few scholarships because most of them required way too much time to complete and too community service and had too much competition. She didn't have time to do community service and also swim competitively so that part of the applications always stymied her. This one was though her school ... it's only a couple hundred dollars, but it's something! The best thing about it wasn't the money, but that it made her feel good.

Our graduation is at the football field on Friday night, no rain in the forecast but the high that day is going to be 97!!!!! DS that had surgery is still struggling with all the events. He attended Baccalaureate Sunday and had to leave immediately after the ceremony, normally they stay to take pictures. I don't know how he is going to be able to walk the field. I am serving the seniors breakfast after the rehearsal on Thursday so we will figure something out then. Baseball banquet was last night so we are finished with everything except graduation.

That's great! A lot of them are a lot of work! One my daughter did was 1,500 words- she says "My whole senior thesis didn't need to be this long!" And many are community service based but I knew that from the time she was young and steered her into getting in as much community service hours are she could when she was young and as she got older she just did them on her own.

That would be nice- she applied for a few different ones through the masons, eastern star and some other organizations- my brother is a member of every organization you can think of LOL.

Just got home from LA. UCLA is out. The campus was absolutely gorgeous and has so much to offer for his major, but LA just did not do it for him. For my kid the city is just as important as the school. Has to be both.

Don't know if you consider this a safety issue, but we noticed a significant homeless population in Santa Monica (but really no different than other parts of L.A., San Diego and San Francisco.)

We just returned from staying in Santa Monica. I was so shocked at the sheer number of homeless throughout the city. We travel to San Diego and San Francisco almost every summer and Santa Monica has far more homeless on the streets in my opinion. We were really taken aback by it. Usually we don't bat an eye or feel unsafe, but we saw so much aggressive behavior and many, many drug deals. It was eye-opening. We even had a homeless man storm into the breakfast area of our hotel and start screaming and threatening people. It was unreal. Sadly, I believe this gave our son a negative view of the LA area and swayed his decision in a very small way.

We are, too. We were very impressed by everything we saw on campus, but it wasn't enough to pry him away from UT.

We are from NY so we are VERY familiar with homeless people all over the place but last year when my daughter went to Brown in Providence RI for the summer she said the homeless there were SO much more aggressive than the ones we have in the city- when they would tell them no they would follow them saying "why you think you are to good to give us money" and yell at them.
